My mobile just rang and I answered in English, thinking it was my OH (didn't actually look at the screen). I didn't really understand the person on the other end, don't know if they were speaking English with a strong accent or were speaking another language. On further investigation, it seems like the call came from Bern. I don't know anyone in Bern that would have my number, and am debating whether or not I should call back to find out who it was (my normal German is poor enough, let alone my Berndytsch or however they spell it). I should probably just leave it, but I have the number, and curiosity is niggling away at me...

I was a bit rude, I think. I really didn't understand them at all, but it sounded like they were properly trying to talk to me. I said "I can't hear you" and hung up, hoping they thought it was a problem with signal. I'm just wondering if it's someone who was trying to reach me, or a wrong number. They stayed on the line for quite a while before I decided I couldn't be arsed

Text the phone number in question to 4411. Include the area code and without spaces eg 0412223333 then text that to 4411. As long as it's a listed landline, you receive a text back with name and address.
Works everytime.

A related problem is when a Telefax machine calls your number once.

You are expected to see the number in your display and return the call. What you don't realise is the number is a very expensive service payment charging number. This occurs every day!

I am not sure of the technical name, but via your telephone bill, you pay the number you called for a service performed. In this case no service is provided, but you have been charged for it.
