Drink water!

Guys, it is very hot in Switzerland so please drink water often.

If you feel thirsty, it is already to late. Make sure you drink at least 2 liters per day and if you sweat, you can go easily to 4 liters.

Enjoy Summer!

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? I thought I was your mom!!!!!!!

The Tropics of Switzerland..

If I drink anymore water, my bladder won't hold between the regular five minutes trips to prinkle... Now that would be very embarassing...

*gulps one more litre*

Re: Drink water!

Seeing as this fountain of knowledge thread may be reaching some people for the first time, may I also heartily recommend sleeping regularly, brushing one's teeth (floss where required) and frequent reproductive acts to ensure that mankind as one will continue to strive and populate this planet.

And to anyone from NASA just happening to be on EF, please keep up the good work with the planned Mars Missions and further exploratory projects in the solar system (as we know it) to ensure that our species may also flourish into time and infinity when our own physical bodies and souls are no longer.

Thanks for the tip Nil, I would have completely forgotten about the destiny of our race if you hadn't reminded those you shamefully left behind struggling for pearls of moisture in Switzerland.

Note to Nil
1) Zurich is grey skies today
2) Everyone sweats - you should define by how much.
3) If you feel thirsty it is not too late - it is just a sign that you need to drink water. Too late comes a lot later - perhaps this helps
4) Your body uses around 1.5 litres of water, taken from food and drink, under "normal" conditions. If your body is excreting MORE than that you need to take more fluid on. If you are peeing clear, very frequently you are over-hydrated
5) Water isn't necessarily the best form of rehydration if you have lost "salts". If you take on too much water your brain main suffer from salt osmosis - where the high concentrations of salts in the spinal fluid balance across the bodies fluid.

But don't you worry Nil, you preach uneducated information, it really helps

A fact? So that will be easy to prove then. Can you please list the research papers that back up your statement?

Well snopes has this - http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/8glasses.asp

The original 1.5 litres does come from US research in the 50s.

If you want evidence of overhydration look at the cases of people who have taken ecstacy - not danced like a banshee, but drunk water (as per the guidelines) and then died due to salt osmosis. Once that begins to happen it is VERY difficult to correct - dehydrating someone while getting back in the salts is challenging.

The thrist mechanism is however very weak - and can be confused with hunger.

The only people who actively campaign for us to drink more water are the mineral water companies. In fact, the push for higher water consumption has not come about due to published scientific reports indicating we HAVE to drink more water - but due to the rising popularity of bottled water.

1.5l of water consumption per day from food and water (original research) - became 1.5l of water from fluids, then 1.5l of only water to now 2-3l of water.

It is a con.

Re: Drink water!

Check your pee. If it's dark and smelly, drink more. If it's clear, you're good to go. About 5 pee-ings per day, clearish, is fine (according to my old cross country coach ).

The salt thing is pretty contentious. I read some convincing stuff both ways. When I lived in the Deep Deep South as well as the desert, I worked outside, and ran regularly, and never took a salt supplement nor drank Gatorade or similar. Just water. My entourage did likewise; no one suffered any ill effects.
