Translating birth certificate

Hello,
In my husbands office, they have asked for translated birth certificate. It is in english. They want it in German.
Has anyone done this? Where it has to be translated? How much does it cost?

Thanks a lot.

Re: Translating birth certificate

Hi there

I needed my birth certificate also translated earlier this year and I used this place:

Had no problems and I think I paid something like 175.- Chf

Hope this helps

Re: Translating birth certificate

I recently used this service in Bern http://www.translation-helpcenter.com/ for English to German translation and would happily recommend it. For 4 one-page documents (including birth certificates) I paid a little under 200 francs and it was ready within 2 days. I'd emailed some other agencies for quotes and been told 4-500 francs and 4-5 days for the same job.

Re: Translating birth certificate

This isn't much help but it sounds a bit off to me - even the authorities here accept birth certificates in English. I could understand it if the document was in Chinese or similar, but English?

Re: Translating birth certificate

I think most official documents have to be translated into a Swiss language for marriage etc. I had to have mine done. Took ages, my mother couldn't remember where she had "put it away in a safe place"!!! But once found it only took a couple of days. The translation had to be done by someone who was on some sort of register as an official translator.

Not necessarily: in Zurich city, at least, English is considered equal to the three official languages when it comes to birth certificates and so on.

Of course, this being Switzerland, it varies from canton to canton...

Another only in Switzerland anecdote...goodluck with your translation. Seems a bit high some of the prices quoted here just for the sake of a document saying Gebortsdatum rather than Date of Birth... we all got to make money somehow. Goodluck with the translation

Indeed.

After my wife and I got married in the US while on vacation in the late '90s, upon returning to CH the ZH authorities immediately accepted my English language marriage certificate, but my wife's Heimatort (in canton SG) did not (so I was married and she wasn't ), and it had to be sent to the Swiss Consulate in NYC to be officially translated, albeit free of charge!

Re: Translating birth certificate

I wonder if you could shop around and see if it's cheaper to get it translated into any of the other Swiss languages. They couldn't very well object if you turn up in, say, Bern with a birth certificate translated into Italian because it was cheaper to do, could they?

My son's english birth certificate was accepted (in english) when he married in the canton of Geneva last year. It just had to be a certified copy that was less than 6-months old.

Re: Translating birth certificate

LOOK NO FURTHER!!!

My husband and I are very opposed to swiss prices... When we had to do this we got it done from Australia, from English to German. It $100. Which I think is about 90 chf. (Beats 250) Here is the info. Dammann translations. I don't know if they do any other languages, but I would email them and ask. Chances are they must. translations@dammann.com.au

You are welcome!

I also used www.renaca.ch for translating a birth certificate and had it notarized. It was very quick, I could drop it off in his mail box and then he returned it to me in 2 days. It was an official translation and could be used for my application for marriage. Mine cost 150 chf for the translation and notarization. This is much cheaper than some of the other translations that I found, up to 270 chf.

Good luck!

I would inquire doubly about what they need the translation for. For my Swiss citizenship application, they needed a newly-issued birth certificate, and English was fine. (My original is in Spanish, so it still cost a fortune to have a copy re-issued and translated and notarized.)

If even the Swiss federal government accepts English, there's no reason why any other government entity should not. And other than to fulfil a government request, I see no reason why a company should need a birth certificate at all.

The Swiss government has a unified civil registry database (Infostar). All levels of government are required to use Infostar (and only Infostar) for this kind of thing. Once my birth certificate made it into there as part of the citizenship application, it was available for other uses, too. (E.g. for a wedding/civil union.)

Re: Translating birth certificate

Hello all,

We have to get 3 documents translated (parents birth certs and marriage cert) in Kanton Schwyz. Looking to get it done for less than the estimated CHF 300 from the translator recommended by the zivilstandsamt. Can the translators above be used in any canton or is there some sort of official list?

Thanks!
