My partner just called me with the news that the glass oven door just exploded showering glass fragments all over the room!!
It was cold (we used it last night) and went off with a loud bang. What´s more the fragments of glass on the ceramic tiles floor were jumping around like jumping beans and crackling.
It it just as well the dogs were not walking past it at the time , oh yes and my partner , otherwise they could have been badly injured.

Anyone ever come across this before?? Bog standard Siemens oven.
I know someone who had an oven door where the glass cracked and it was replaced and the insurance paid for it.

If you rent, contact the owner, though it may not hurt to contact your own insurance company as well, and of course, the manufacturer of the oven.

Glad no one was hurt.

Im a Landlord and exactly the same thing happened to the safety glass in the oven of one of my flats in Scotland. I called the manufacturers and they said sometimes a small chip or scratch can weaken the glass and it explodes. They sent out a replacement which cost 60 pounds. I would tell the landlord what happened and they should replace it.

My flatmate leans against pretty much anything when he talks to you, including the oven. Will have to tell him to lean 60 cm further along, don't fancy replacing the oven due to explosion!
My oven door just exploded on the inside, glass everywhere regardless. I was making my weekly chicken breast ration (currently back on the low carb lots of fresh veg wagon) too, gah, couldn't it have exploded over a load of inexpensive vegetables? I can't open the door any more and the technician can only come Monday (well, he could come today but it would be a 500 franc job), so that's going to be interesting *eeeeeugh*...

I only have had a coffee machine burning down. Shocking and not understandable, but to my good luck, I was only five meters away and could settle the matter

As the door most likely is gone anyway I would try to open it with some mechanical instrument around .

I'd rather not as I don't want to give them any chance of blaming the defect on me. It's a 5'500 franc oven, I don't fancy paying for replacing any part of it myself.

Good argument, I admit. At least as long as there is no danger of the situation to escalate further

Re: My oven door just exploded!! WTF!!!

Not that uncommon it appears.

Generally the result of imperfections or scratches in the glass. Combine that with the stresses generated during the cycle of heating which can leave some areas of the glass much more highly stressed than others. If there's an imperfection or a scratch in one of these high stress areas then this can lead to the beginnings of a crack propagation, which is then fueled by the heating/cooling cycles. These cracks or scratches are often invisible and at first grow very very slowly over the course of months, or even years. Once the crack has propagated to a certain point the glass is no longer able to hold the stress and the crack will propagate across the entire glass within a fraction of a second, i.e shatter. Can happen equally as much when cold as when hot.

Not really helping you much there Kittster, but at least you have an idea what happened

My dear Slaphead where did you read all of this!
In the last 30years we have had quite a few different glass cooking tops and have now a nice 90 X 54 cm one. The wife likes to cook now and again with an old cast-iron pan. This has made inside of a few months some wonderful scratches (just like on all the glass plates from the last 30years)
The glass on the cooking plates is the same as on oven doors.
Why do the cooking plates not explode from the heat + scratches and the oven doors do?
Although the glass from the cooking plates has most of the time, 2 or 3 different heat factors + here and there a little cold water, they very rarely make bang?
Food for thought?

Scratches on this type of safety glass are not the problem.
Chips in the edges and if the safety glass is not able move are the biggest problems.

Glass cooking plates are glued with a very elastic mastic to the metal box.
The glass doors are screwed together with very little chance to move.
Salut Zämma

This has happened to me twice... I know, what are the odds?!
First time one of the welds on a door hinge gave way and it slammed up against the inner part of the door, shattering both inner and outer panes. Fortunately the household insurance covered the replacement parts. Second time it was the same problem but the oven was so old (12 years)that the spare parts were no longer avaliable.
The following evening we spotted a similar model on the side of the road waiting for the monthly collection of larger rubbish..... sneaked out under the cover of darkness with the car, took it back to our place, removed the entire door and hinges, took now mutilated stove back to where we'd found it.... lasted us another ten years without any more problems and we handed it on to a friend. Who still has it.
Thirty years old now, not bad I suppose for a Sholtes stove these days.

Ours exploded quite spectacularly last night -- a Siemens oven that's about 3.5 years old. It's out of warranty -- any idea what it will cost us to put right?

Re: My oven door just exploded!! WTF!!!

You can usually take the door off the oven (Se hand book) Then send door to Siemens repair center, that should reduce your costs considerably.

wouldnt even do that.

Look online for a replacement glass and seals and replace it yourself if you have a screwdriver.

Re: My oven door just exploded!! WTF!!!

Reviving an old thread because ... ahh ... my oven door just exploded. One month before we move out. Welp, wife is talking to the agency, who will - I presume - talk to the landlord. The oven is just over a year old, so I am hoping Zug will repair it under warranty.
