My oven door just exploded!! WTF!!!

My partner just called me with the news that the glass oven door just exploded showering glass fragments all over the room!!
It was cold (we used it last night) and went off with a loud bang. What´s more the fragments of glass on the ceramic tiles floor were jumping around like jumping beans and crackling.
It it just as well the dogs were not walking past it at the time , oh yes and my partner , otherwise they could have been badly injured.

Anyone ever come across this before?? Bog standard Siemens oven.

Here is an article about the lack of laws in Switzerland pertaining to recalls of faulty products.
http://www.ktipp.ch/themen/beitrag/1...aehrlich_leben

Basically, I've never heard of such an incident before..but it may well have been a recall and the consumer wasn't informed. I would check with the landlord or call up Siemens directly.

Same thing happened with one of our window. Out of no where we heard a bang and the windows was cracked. It was the inside window ( they were double and the outside part was fine).

No, because it was safety glass.

So, hot "safety glass" blowing to pieces from an oven doesn't cause injuries?

Re: My oven door just exploded!! WTF!!!

Quote:
Tempered glass is created when a sheet of glass is cooled very rapidly, causing internal compressive stresses to be “trapped” within the glass. This makes the glass very strong, but because the external “skin” of the sheet is compressing the “guts” of the glass, a scratch on the skin can create a weak spot that can lead to the rapid release of the trapped stress (rapid as in explosive).
If a flaw in the glass was trapped during the tempering process, you might not even need the scratch to trigger the failure. The repeated expansion and contraction cycle of an oven in normal use may have expanded the flaw. It may have been just the right time for your oven door to fail.
I have a glass-topped coffee table in my living room, top made of tempered glass, that has accumulated a lot of little scratches over the past 7 years. I expect that it will go, and go spectacularly, one of these days. Could be today, could last another 7 years.

Quote:
You were the victim of improper tempering.

In an effort to strengthen and condition a glass for hard use (impacts, temperature changes...) glass like the one in your oven door went through a strengthening process called tempering. Basically, after the glass was formed, the outside edge was heated and cooled very quickly. This made the outside of the glass cool faster than the inside. Because glass expands when heated and contracts when cooled, this uneven cooling puts an internal stress on the glass forming a compressive (strengthening) force on the surface. The problem with this process is it's inherantly unstable. It is very hard to uniformly heat and cool the outside of the glass when tempering so not only is there stress on the surface from the outer edge cooling faster but there are higher stress points where part of the surface cooled faster then its neighboring section. With use this stress becomes focused and can (as it did with your oven) cause the glass to violently shatter.

A sure sign of this type of failure is how the glass breaks. My guess is it didn't break the way your house windows would, but instead it "blew up" into many small pieces, some of them almost powderized. This is because to relieve all that internal stress the broken glass forms as much new surface area as possible, in this case a large number of small blunt pieces. This is called dicing.

You might find out who made the glass and go to them saying your glass was improperly tempered.

As a side note, most glass manufactures are moving away from tempering as a strengthening method for this very reason.

Yet another reason to stay out of the kitchen...

(Glad that nobody was hurt, though - must have been scary)

That should not happen - there must have been stress in the glass.

A very rare thing - I would inform Seimens without delay.

My glass bathroom scales exploded last week.
All alone in the bathroom it was, no-one near it.
Must have been atmospheric pressure

Re: My oven door just exploded!! WTF!!!

It happened to my mom years ago, while baking in Italy on New Year's Eve. Nobody was really surprised about the noise.

In our case it was just the "outside" layer of the oven glass which broke due to the temperature differential between inside and outside (and mostly because it was very old, and probably already had micro-fractures), and consequently led to the "inner" layer exploding as well. We brought the glass fragments back and got a brand new door. Luckily nobody was hurt, but Silvester 2009 will always be remembered as The Day The Oven Exploded.

Re: My oven door just exploded!! WTF!!!

How funny that happened to me! My oven door exploded last year. The oven was on, I shut it and a moment later it literally exploded sending glass everywhere (and more importantly all over the dinner, which was ruined). The oven came with the house we bought so no warranty etc. It was a Bosch.

We had it fixed and discovered the handle was loose, which was thought to have caused the explosion. Apparently people leaning against the oven over a period of time was putting pressure on the handle and made it loose. Somehow that made friction which pressurised the safety glass and caused it to explode.

That's just the Swiss health assurance reminding you that coke's bad for your health.
It's probably built into the packaging system to remind you that 100 bottles is WAY to many
