| | | Church Bells
Living in Städtli Eglisau (NW from Zürich), about 30 yards from the Church Steeple... the bells ring every 15mn, 30mn, 45mn, and on the hour (twice for every hour) I have lived close to churches before, but never before have they been so LOUD, and rung so much... Sure can't forget the time!!!

Christianity isn't about peace and quiet in 14 minutes slots you know.....
I presume that they didn't build the church after you moved in? You may have noticed it when you first checked out the place.

The only time I hear it now is if I have a sleepness night, when it reminds me it's 4am and I haven't slept yet.

Sure knew about he church, had no clue how bad this would be though... the agent who rented us the place kept saying this was a very quiet place :-) And some people worry about the airport related noise... The church bells are much louder than an airplane

I used to live so close to the train station in Nyon that I knew the time from the platform announcements. I was never late for anything. Consider the bells as an advantage, turn a negative into a positive, etc, etc....

I was so happy when me moved away from Bern a few weeks ago. Church bells always ruined our walks when trying to get my colicky daughter asleep, they resonate through all the town and sometimes it seemed there will never be a safe haven from them. And during certain times of the week it went for 30 minutes nonstop. Seemed like they were trying to wake up all the dead.
Our village church is so excellent by comparison. Mild and soft and barely audible bells that can not be heard when windows are closed. It is so perfect. If it keeps silent, I do not even mind that nasty stench when pig manure pits of our neighbour's farm are being cleaned.

I had huge problems to fall asleep when I moved home in Portugal, since our new house was literally on the other side of the street of the main church. The problem only lasted for 2 weeks. After a while, I didn't hear it anymore.
Actually, on the day the bell mechanism got ruined and didn't work after 4 am, I woke up at dawn wondering "Something is wrong! What's wrong?????".
I live in a small town, in the centre of a triangule of 3 churches that fight for the "loudest bell" prize.
I actually like it since I can make sure I didn't overslept
But the cow bells, now those are annoying

Is it just me????
or
When I look for an apartment to live in, I can see where there is a BLOODY GREAT CHURCH BELL and I can rest assured that this place will be quite noisy.
Why do they have to be so loud?
My personal theory is:
"THEY WERE BUILT BEFORE THE INTERNET AND MOBILE PHONES, and only the wealthy could afford a watch"
This is how people knew the time back then.
People complaining about church bells in a Christian country are equally as annoying as the bells themselves.
The church isn't going anywhere...... it's not going to change...... the only solution is to MOVE.

I think rental rates must be cheaper if nearer to a church ( or Mosque as in back home ).

Well, in my case, the churches are actually far away. But I live in a valley, to the noise echoes. And being a small village, the night is utterly silent, so the minimum noise, such as a neighbour coughing, can be heard.
Sometimes it's not possible to foresee the noise the church bell might make, specially if you only visit your future home during the day, when other noises muffle the bells.
And it's perfectly normal and ok to point out that something new and unexpected is bothering you, and ask for less radical solutions than moving... Even if just for the comfort of finding someone else with the same problem...

We live opposite a church.
However, we did our research before moving and it only rings at 11.00 in the morning and 18.00 which is fine (unless I'm on a conference call at 18.00!).
It doesn't bother me at all and it's totally quiet at other times, plus, we're not overlooked by neighbours.
It's win-win!
