Re: Freezing Weather

It's mid-December, winter has finally arrived, the forecast for the weekend is totally normal.

What were you planning to do? There must be alternatives.

Assuming you mean "weather", it's cold and a bit of snow. If you were dreaming of a swim in the lake I think it's been scotched. If, however, you were dreaming of a day's skiing, you might be in luck.

Top Tip: A little further information in your post goes a long way to helping you get a reasonable response...

Re: Freezing Weather

Had a fabulous week with the family and little ones over. Snow and sun winter wonderland. Woke up to 30cm of fresh snow this am so been shoveling since 6am so they could start their way back to the UK. Still snowing heavily - will not relax until I know they are safe on the Motorway in Besançon after crossing the snowy Jura.

Edit: they've made it down the hill ok, now on Mway towards Troyes - raining but roads ok.

Coldest night in Ch was last night, in SZ ( Glattalp ) at -31 degrees!

Engadin ( Suoz ) at -25 degrees.

Only Tessin remained frost free.

In the Engiadina and the Bregaglia you in January often have temperatures around minus 20°C, but minus 25° is really deep, and even more surprising is that the deepest temperature was not in Bever but down in Zuoz

Re: Freezing Weather

Take heart that the same report also says:

Quote:
According to weather statistics, the first half of January, on average, the coldest time of year, writes SF Meteo
As we are already in mid Jan, it will gradually get warmer.

And as someone once said, there is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.

Too cold in my apartment (17.9 grad).

Re: Freezing Weather

The weatherman has said that this Thursday onwards could be very cold, say minus 30 in the Upper Engadine.

Swissinfo DE

Quote:
Be expected from Thursday freezing temperatures in Switzerland

Widespread snowfalls were announced for the weekend - after all it was just a froth in the lowlands.

After all, the snow fell in Ticino the first time this winter and into the lowlands. The mild winter will soon end: Siberian temperatures are at the door.

While the Central Plateau was sugared with only a few centimeters were able to enjoy at least the southern Ticino on the first snow this winter.

According Meteomedia fell here in the early hours of Sunday between ten and thirty inches of snow. For two and a half month drought came to an end, with mild temperatures. The heat had been on average some plants such as camellias, forsythia and cherry trees to bloom prematurely brought. Despite the onset of winter weather warning led to several traffic accidents in Ticino and disabilities. Thus, according Viasuisse came on Sunday morning, the traffic on the A2 motorway between Chiasso and Airolo after injuries stalled. Roads had to be locked in Lugano, cars were only allowed to drive with chains. The air traffic was disrupted by the Lugano-Agno. . The airport postponed on Sunday morning, two flights, because the tracks were lifted in time of snow fall in temperature on Thursday , although the plateau was covered with snow again, it is now clear that January was too warm - and by two to three degrees, as Meteomedia announced.

With the warm temperatures, but soon concluded. With the new month, meteorologists say also requires a change in the weather. "Now the weather conditions are fundamentally" tells Meteonews. A huge high-vis Russia is icy cold from mid-week, but send dry air into Switzerland.

On Thursday there will be highest minus five degrees, which meteorologists expect more ice days in a row. have to put very warm in the winter sports, especially in the mountains. This coming weekend will be at 2000 meters to the expected minus 20 degrees. Could fall in the Upper Engadine, the temperatures even up to 30 degrees below zero, writes Meteomedia.

Re: Freezing Weather

It looks to be very cold by the weekend, even here in Basel.

I have a bit of a mental detach though when it comes to temperatures, particularly negative ones. I can convert a rough estimate between warm temps okay, with at least basic concept of farenheit to celsius to tell myself if a weather forecast is showing we're going to be comfy or not.

I have a really hard time though with negatives, maybe because the time before moving here that I even dealt with sub-freezing temps was living in Chicago and when it's -27°F (plus wind-chill), it's really flipping cold! (I remember the power going out because there was so much ice on the tree out back, one of the branches broke from the weight, snapping the also-frozen power line as it fell.)

I guess it's because 0°C and 32°F are the same, having experienced -27°F, -2°C or so really doesn't seem so bad.

I remember it well (loved living there) The last year I lived in Chicago there were a couple of days where officials broadcast warnings on TV and radio not to breath the air in without having something over your mouth and nose, it was so cold it could cause damage to some.

Re: Freezing Weather

In my original country the current forecast for the next 4 days is -35 to -30, in some places up to -32. According to health regulations, school gym classes are not to be held outdoors if it is below -20.

So -5? Put a sweater on.
