| | | Re: UK guy wears parka with small German flag, receives abuse. Hello Switzerland | Quote: | | | | | This is a slightly weird comment. Would be interesting to know why you think this. The UK has, unlike many countries, a wonderful music scene. And each music scene has a fashion tied into it. I am a huge fan of the 'mod' scene and any English person would know that for that reason alone someone might purchase a parka. Indeed, if they saw someone in a parka, they could well be a mod/soul fan too - or maybe they ride a vespa.
The fact that it has a small German flag on the jacket is, to me at least, neither here nor there and certainly not unusual. But I stress again, the reason for purchasing the jacket is because it's very, very warm and I like the colour! Quite simple really.
When I was at school, German para boots were all the rage (though I don't recall they had a flag on them). They were well made and this was the primary reason for buying them I believe.
I don't see how it can be classed as 'sad' that this jacket can be purchased in the UK. Is it wrong that I can buy Raclette in the UK? | | | | | I had a parka and a Vespa, but it was 1966 then.
We used to have US flags on them as they were theoretically cooler if they looked like ex-US army issue. What I find sad is that the bland German flag that is so easily mistaken and I suspect half of Britain think is Belgium or Holland, is now plonked on garments sold in the UK. What's the point? What does it mean??

Obviously they were simply taking the 'Mickey' of you. No-one really care what flag you have on your jacket. Unless you are wandering around Glasgow with an English flag (the George Cross) about you... LOL!

Instantly my two Swiss colleagues who have, shall we say, an interesting view on just about all other nations, latched onto the fact that I was wearing a jacket with the German flag and that 1) they would NEVER wear it 2) that I would need to be very careful wearing it out in town and that 3) I should consider growing a moutasche and combing my hair over. | | | | | I would definitely now grow a mustache and comb my hair over. Actually, now you have to do that. Just for them. And try to scream erratically more in the office as well. | Quote: | | | | | oh man.... take some of this. 3 times a day, everyday. Maybe that's why I'm lacking humor. Oh, if I could only learn to stick things into my anus, then I might actually enjoy life. Damn.

i used to wear bundeswehr clothes all the time in the US. i also have a cool german cop leather jacket from the 1970s that weighs like 200 lbs its so thick which i painstakingly got the proper epalletten and "MUENCHEN" badge for. got the freistaat bayern patch on the sleeve and everything!
im probably the wrong person to talk to about this since ive worn army stuff since i was kid (hey, if its durable/warm enough for soldiers it should last me a while) since it was edgy and inexpensive and generally of good quality.
now i wear suits, but still wear combat boots to the office.
theres nothing wrong with the good ol bundeswehr. its a representation of the rehabilitation of the german state and its institutions. the democratic traditions of the black red gold date back to 1848 if not earlier, and is a fine flag with a good history. indeed, id say its less morally ambiguous to wear the bundeswehr parka with a lil bundesfahne on the sleeve than an article of clothing with the stars and stripes. and *certainly* more so than the confederate flag, with its very mixed traditions and history (although in europe the confederate flag seems to be associated more with truckers and motorcycle clubs than with Pickets Charge, Antietam, Robert E lee and all that)
in short, OP, tell your coworkers to get stuffed! |
