| | | beware of tricky guys at Geneva Gare Cornavin
yesterday while we were waiting for the night bus, some guy came to us, we talked a bit like it's so long to wait, blah blah... then he said that there's cafe in sub and he can lead us just to have some coffee while waiting. we went downstairs, but then we passed to another exit, at that point guy start repeating don't worry, i'm your friend so, we went with him for some time, i think his idea was to get us somewhere here http://g.co/maps/vs373
when we turned to go back he even tried to hold my arm to insist on going with him
the guy was italian (as he said), about 40 years old, 1.50-1.60 tall, with tanned face, in anorak and with light backpack
i'm not sure, but probably he's frequenter there as he greeted some suspicious guys in the sub
so, just to warn you, be aware of this guy, don't drink coffee with him | | The following 5 users would like to thank dreadnaxt for this useful post: | |

The moral of the story? Don't take sweets from strangers or believe submarines serve coffee...

What makes you think we're so stupid that we would fall for something so blatently silly as this ?

Switzerland somehow has a reputation as a safe haven. So an occasional warning, as obvious as it may sound to the world weary, is a good thing.

You've got to be cautious, ask yourself why this stranger is wanting me to do that and think about consequences

you can think whatever you want, i just warned | | | | | I meet a lot of strangers in my travels and I'm friendly with them too, buying coffees/drinks, exchanging email addressees, etc.. but you have to be smart about it.
It's reckless to go off to an area away from people where you could be isolated, with someone you don't know to a place you've never been to before. I'm glad for you that nothing bad happened this time, but man you've got to be a bit more cautious in the future.
Doing things like that doesn't make you friendly, it makes you a missing persons report waiting to happen.

Hmmm... Im waiting for the night bus which i assume it will come in around 10 minutes since if it was longer i would wait to the place i was before. Some stranger asks me to follow him and i do. Hmmm... People are always friendly right? Nothing bad will happen in a country i dont know much about
Seriously???

okok, let's make the things clear. you have more than 1 hour to wait, the bar you've been before is closed, another one you was expecting to visit to wait for the bus is also closed, so the only thing you can do is to wait in the stop. now, the guy who was there as well comes and starts talking to you, then he's saying that there's a cafe downstairs in sub. i know, that there're some cafes, but i was not sure they're working at night. he's saying that there's one. and now the question is, why the hell should i refuse to go and find out new place which is opened at night?
sure it was obvious that there's no cafe as soon as he lead us to the other exit from sub, but then it was more the question of having some fun instead of just standing in the stop.
thanx for the advises, but in my native country i'm used to things more dangerous than just following the stranger for some time (taking in account that there's 2 of us and he's alone)
and finally, this post was for people who live in geneva and who could probably meet exactly this guy! ok? it was not an Captain Obvious advice as some of you suggested
anyway, have fun

I live in Geneva. But even so. The guy might approach you alone but lead you to a place where 10 of his friends wait to beat you up. Then what?

I think everyone knows how notorious the area around Gare Cornavin is and for anyone to wander off into a sub with a stranger while waiting for the night bus is not sensible to say the least. Anyway, doesn't hurt to spread the message on the forum. For everyone, just to re-iterate, be extra cautious around Gare Cornavin !
Switzerland, in general, maybe safe, but the area around Gare Cornavin is surely not !!

personally I think Cornavin is a bit better now that it was a year ago, but it's still a place to use utmost caution even in the daytime.
going wandering with a stranger "in the subway" while waiting for the Noctumbus is silly to the point of being dangerous.
glad you didn't get hurt.. or worse dreadnaxt
