Re: Earthquake?

It was first time in my life as well.. it was interesting how fast i just came in to conclusion that it must be earthquake.. and i was hoping for more but it seems nothing is coming at least for now..

the first one was like listening something and the second was so clear, trembling and all.

Ok, well according to that map Hirzel is about the closest and I live in Hirzel. Have just come inside from checking for falling trees and looking for traffic accidents. Thanks for letting me know EF, hopefully there'll be no more and we can get some sleep.
Also in Hirzel dorf and felt it very strongly....where should one go in an emergency....an open field or to the school up the hill?

Re: Earthquake?

I'm still awake from this! Woke up shortly before it happened (happened last time I felt a small quake in the States too oddly enough... premonition??) and then the little tremor and then big rumbling. Scared the crap out of me!

Shook the husband awake and he told me it must be the neighbors closing their balcony door below us. HAH! Wait till he reads the news tomorrow and finds out I'm not crazy.

Re: Earthquake?

I can't sleep either so I am googling different sites. The RSOE site reports TWO quakes so that could explain the 1st and 2nd sound/feeling that people are commenting on. One was at a dept of 32KM and the other 16....felt all the way in Basel and Schaffhausen.

Re: Earthquake?

We felt it here in Basel-land.
The furniture and the whole house shook in one quick vibration.
Usually earthquakes are a back-and-forth vibration which lasts several seconds. This one was short but well-felt. At first we were sure that something broke in the house; perhaps a wall collapsing. Then we concluded it must have been an earthquake.

I'm still awake from this!
My adrenaline has finally calmed down from all this. I didn't realize at first that it was an earthquake. I thought my neighbours exploded something downstairs, or something weird was going on outside. I was really frightened for a few minutes until I came to EF and the top post was 'Earthquake?'

In our case, I am the crazy one, and my hubby was right (first thing he suggested was earthquake, though he slept through it!)

Did anybody's pets act strange before the earthquake? My cat didn't seem to notice there was going to be a rumble.

Re: Earthquake?

So glad I am not the only one with a husband snorting in disbelief

Can't sleep and and am awake just straightening all the pictures in the living room, they have all tilted an inch! TV has moved too.

I specifically turned down a job in Istanbul due to a slight phobia of this. Typical!

Am pacing like a fractious cat....

Re: Earthquake?

Protip of the day: The feeling of two earthquakes can also be explained by the different waves emitted by an earthquake travelling at different speeds. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seismic_wave (especially the nice gifs under the primary/secondary wave articles).

Basically, first you will find the primary wave which moves you back and forth in the direction of the source of the earthquake. Shortly the secondary wave follows which has a movement perpendicular to the primary wave, if the source of the earthquake is in front or behind you it would move you sideways.

Re: Earthquake?

This weekend is getting more and more bizarre....25 work colleagues contracted a virus in one day on Friday, earthquake on Saturday and just heard Whitney Houston has died in the early hours this morning.

Usually it's just shopping, eating butterzopf and jam and watching rubbish telly.
