Alcohol at Migros

When my wife and I were house hunting in Zug the other week, we stocked up for some Brotzeit in the local Migros.

Could I find the the beer section to accompany my bread and salami? I spent 10 minutes traipsing the aisles and ended up having to ask a member of staff .....she seemed more shocked that we had asked than our shock of no beer (or wine)

So what's the story? Is Migros run by Quakers like Cadbury's?

Re: Alcohol at Migros

No, but it is their policy not to sell wine, beer or spirits. Plenty of other places do: Coop, Aldi, Lidl, Denner (owned by Migros btw), Manor just to name the major ones.

Re: Alcohol at Migros

Migros does not sell alcoholic drinks or cigarettes nor pornographic magazines of any level of explicitness. Some say the policy is due to Duttweilers (the founder) principle that the sale of those health damaging products should not be supported through cheap prices.

But that's why they have Denner

... leaving only the dreadful (added) taste ... which, come to think of it, is somewhere between Jägermeister and Rivella Yellow -- so, not so bad, then.

Ah, I heard the owner had a family member that was an alcoholic... but this starts to sound like an urban legend!
And indeed, the partners sell alcohol.

I'm confused...at what point in history did Migros have cheap prices?

There's often a Denner within a stone's throw of a Migros, and it's not an accident (M owns Denner). Denner is about half staple items, half alcohol and tobacco. Decent prices. And nothing cooler and more anti-OldSuisse than walking around with a bright red Denner bag .

Re: Alcohol at Migros

Denner's fresh products tend to be pretty bad though. At least they have tons of half price six packs of wine bottles from a relatively decent selection.

Migros *does* have alcohol in some (usually chocolate based) products, like copies of Lindt Kirsch Batons or Waffeln.

Re: Alcohol at Migros

To those who think it's pretty hypocritical not to sell alcohol (Migros) but own another store chain that does (Denner), it must be said that that it is a very new thing. Denner was founded in 1881 and always sold alcohol, whereas Migros was founded in 1925, and not selling alcoholic products (except ready-made cheese fondue and, very recently, some chocolate products) was one of the main principles of the founder, Gottlieb Duttweiler, indeed.

However, it wasn't before 2007 that Migros bought 70% of Denner. Of course, one of the reasons was the fact that the Migros management saw the market for alcoholic beverages but did not want to infringe the credo of its still very much respected founder.

I beg to differ. My life is pretty great WITH alcohol. Not all of us can be teetotalers, you know. That link you posted was terrible, BTW... I stopped reading at "Alcohol is a depressant - this means it can make you feel unhappy."

No, a depressant means that it depresses the functions of certain areas of the brain and/or nervous system. Also, if you think alcohol makes you unhappy, just hang with me on a Friday night and I'll change your mind.
