If you ask the average Italian, it's not that he/she likes espresso,
it's that he/she can barely survive without.
Now with my tool, the electric moka,
http://www.englishforum.ch/attachmen...8&d=1335356932
I make about 30 coffees with 250 grams of ground coffee,
which makes an average price of 0.08 to 0.20 francs per
coffee depending on the price of the package.
Compare it to 2.1 francs which is the price of an espresso
in the cafeteria in my company, it gives 10 to 26 coffees
for the price of 1. And the quality is much better.
This is definitely true... I can't live without coffee/espresso
The only thing is that we can't compare the moka with the espresso, both really good but very different

They have two more shops: one in Kleinbasel between bus stops Feldbergstrasse and Hammerstrasse (30), and another in Gundeli near Falkensteinerstrasse (36)

The best for me is still Caffè Eccetera on Mittlere Strasse

mmmhhh... I'm taking a note about these

Well I have an espresso machine at home, but you know it's not very handy to bring in the office!

I love espresso, it’s the key to getting me through my mornings at work! I actually agree with your comment, the proximity of Italy means that even the imported coffee will be practically as good.

It's called caffeism, and you need to pray (drink a good espresso) 3-4 times a day

Caffe Americano ? To the luck of many people, a Milano barman, confronted by a young American with a very serious hangover, served the man a standard or rather extra-strong espresso. The man recovered and then systematically informed himself about real Italian coffee, and on this basis established Starbucks. (let's not talk about those "baby-drinks" that comany also offers ! )
Didn't know the story. Anyway I think Starbucks is so succesful because it introduced the concept of the european cafeteria, which was lacking in the USA.
The Italian bars are different beasts: they serve espressos and cappuccinos but usually people consume them quickly and standing. But... old people often play cards there (Italian cards), and they are meeting points to go out (maybe after having an espresso...), so they are similar to a cafeteria, but you don't have to seat to have something...

True, all kinds of alcohol.
Including digestives, which are very popular in Italy (amaro),
limoncello...

From what I've observed, having an espresso is just an excuse for another grappa.

It's called caffé e ammazzacaffé (coffee killer)

Really?
I thought women didn't like them.
Anyway my preferred one would be Averna,
followed by Lucano and Montenegro.
My father drinks Cynar and FernetBranca which
are incredibly bitter and I don't know how he
can do that (or anybody else) but they are on the
market for decades so I guess they have their fans.

I like them both, but prefer sambuco with my coffee. I also like Campari (but not with coffee). Tom
