Thank you Adrian, I like your logical approach to the response, are you also a Project Manager by any chance?
yes of course I have friends but they have are almost all in Zurich or have gradually defected there from Basel over the years, the few remaining here have gradually been lost to the twilight zone called 'coupledom' and no longer seem capable of leaving home / their partner's side anymore, which is why I am being proactive to meet more people.
It's not like I want to be out dancing on tables every night, I'd just like the opportunity to know that there are somewhere in Basel tables to dance on should the urge strike me | | The following 6 users would like to thank carlottina for this useful post:

| | | Re: Is Basel utterly lame or is it just me? | Quote: | | | | | I think what she really meant was "Baslers are totally lame"....thus she's looking to relocate. | | | | | I mentioned the lake(s). In case of Geneva, Biel, Lugano, Luzern, Zürich, Rapperswil and Kreuzlingen-Konstanz, the lakes make a bit of an "ambiance" which other cities are lacking. Exceptions are places like Schaffhausen whose "oldworldliness" compensates a bit.
My knowledge of Basel is limited, centred on visits to the airport, and during 3 weeks spending my evenings in Basel-downtown (thanks to our "chief" declaring all of Basel-Stadt as "Ausgangs-Rayon" ) . Plus some adhoc visits enroute to the Elsass. Well, Basel some 160 years ago was the largest city of Switzerland, leading the pack in regard to science, university-education, banking, transport business etc . The nice Turkish restaurants in Türkisch Basel (I mean Klein-Basel) are however really remarkable whenever I prefer the Maghreb restaurants of Mulhouse, a city, whose ambiance is far more to my liking anyway

Is there a fantastic side to the city and a rampant sparkling social life that I have somehow missed? And if so, where on earth is it? | | | | | Living & a own a business here 22+ years, originally from NYC... nope BS is not dull... just ticks different...
If you want to party 24/7... BS is not for you. If you do not speak a bit of (D) then BS can be boring... but as others have said...BS is what you make of it.
From BS I can travel to many other cities either by car or fly and its central to most of Europe.
Generally speaking from my experience in CH, the French speaking parts of Switzerland have a different attitude towards "Vie" aka "Life" as the German... Deutsch Schweiz live to work. French Suisse live to party... and the Italian Suizzera are in between both...
Integration, lingual and socially is a major factor wherever you live...
CH makes you just a bit more aware of it...

Guys (and dolls) simply thank you for all the feedback, for the PMs, suggestions and invites to do things, you've all really helped
I do speak fluent French and German and I guess I thought that I would make local Swiss friends when I came so I never turned to the ex-pat community (when I lived in China most of the ex-pats were either drunken hash harriers or ladies who lunch so that put me off) and then the years slid by and sure I made some friends here but with being away so much for work then I just didn't make the effort to see what else Basel has to offer and now I am between contracts I have time and I really want to enjoy it and meet interesting people, do fun things so this has really helped give a kick start. I guess we don't find til we start looking and so I am happy to dip my toe into what would appear to be a much livelier social scene than I realised | | The following 4 users would like to thank carlottina for this useful post:

Yes, Basel is quite boring and small. Though, I like their old town. That might be a light in the tunnel. Also, the Rhine being right there, you can rent a boat or kajak and have much fun.
