Air Rifle/BB Gun

Hey All,

We are moving to Geneva from the U.S. in August. Does anyone know if I can bring the pellet rifle that I use to shoot targets/cans? It's a Daisy model 880 and due to the Muzzle velocity, I believe that they are even allowed in the uber strict UK, but I can't find any information regarding what rules apply to Switzerland. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Terry

Re: Air Rifle/BB Gun

You should be fine, but will not be able to shoot cans, as these have to be recycled and hitting them would make too much noise.

You will, however, have to apply at the local police station to obtain a current list of all undesirable neighbourhood cats that require culling.

Thanks, I think that the cats are safe, 9 lives and all that. Forgot about the noise issues, I suppose I could play my old Black Sabbath albums really loud to mask the sound...

If I had an air rifle, or a machine gun, or a nuclear weapon, I'd use it to kill pigeons.

Re: Air Rifle/BB Gun

If considered "arms" and not prohibitied "arms", you would need a permit. Here is the list of what the Swiss authorities consider arms. Your air rifle, if it is CO2, and of a certain strength, could be considered arms (see below).

More info on police site, here http://www.ejpd.admin.ch/content/ejp...ef_waffen.html

Only available in French, German or Italian:

Sont considérés comme des armes au sens de la loi sur les armes:
  • les armes à feu telles que les pistolets, les revolvers, les fusils, les fusils à répétition avec système à pompe (pump action), les fusils à répétition à levier de sous-garde (lever action), les armes semi-automatiques (fusils et carabines);
  • les armes à air comprimé et les armes au C02 qui développent une énergie à la bouche d’au moins 7,5 joules ou qui risquent d’être confondues avec des armes à feu;
  • les armes factices, les armes d'alarme et les armes soft air qui risquent d’être confondues avec des armes à feu;
  • les couteaux papillon, les couteaux à lancer, les couteaux dont le mécanisme d’ouverture automatique peut être actionné d’une seule main, dont la longueur totale est supérieure à 12 cm et la longueur totale de la larme est supérieure à 5 cm;
  • les poignards à lame symétrique d'une longueur inférieure à 30 cm;
  • les engins conçus pour blesser des êtres humains tels que les matraques, étoiles à lancer, coups de poing américains, frondes avec repose-bras;
  • tous les appareils à électrochocs ainsi que les sprays contenant des substances irritantes au sens de l’annexe 2 de l’ordonnance sur les armes (OArm), à l’exception des sprays au poivre.

Does that mean I need a permit for this:

No, as it's not "automatique".

Re: Air Rifle/BB Gun

An interesting thread as I bought 2 air weapons with me from the uk, a co2 powered handgun (6 shot) and a normal air rifle, both where on the legal limit in the uk (which isn't much)

Although the seals have probably long dried out by now lol

Re: Air Rifle/BB Gun

Thanks guys,

I'll have my wife translate in full later, but I believe what I'm reading from Runningdeer's post is that as long as a air gun is not CO2 powered, it probably isn't classified as "arms" if it is CO2 powered but develops less than 7.5 joules of projectile energy (say about 5.5 ft pounds) is still doesn't fit the criteria to be considered "Arms."

Is that about right?

The gun I'm talking about has the following criteria;

muzzle velocity 800 fps
approx 15 joules or 11 ft lbs of energy
bolt action single shot for .177 pellets
bolt action repeater for steel bb's
have to pump up the air charge after every shot

Bought is at Walmart for about 40 bucks...

Re: Air Rifle/BB Gun

The 7.5 Joule muzzle energy limit is for compressed air and CO2 alike. Sorry, your rifle is considered as a weapon.

Btw: I do not think that "Bought at Walmart" is a good excuse.

Thanks for the reply. Ironic, Im pretty sure that I could develop more than 7.5 joules with a well thrown brick...I can get those at Home Depot

Re: Air Rifle/BB Gun

Coming back to your problem. As it is classified as a weapon (and not a toy) what does that mean:

You can not possess/import/buy a weapon (air gun with more than 7.5 Joules) if you are from one of the following countries: Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Algeria or Albania.

If you have a residency permit B or C you can apply for a import permit (french) at the Zentralstelle Waffen. You may to submit an official document from your home state that states you are allowed to have the weapon that you want to import. Art. 9a WG.

You can also buy such weapon in Switerland w/o a weapon permit if you have a residency permit B or C and you are at least 18 years old Art. 10 Waffengesetz. You will need a weapon acquiring permit from the Zentralstelle Waffen otherwise.

Even if it is not CO2 powered or fires at less than 7.5 joules, you might still need a permit:

  • les armes factices, les armes d'alarme et les armes soft air qui risquent d’être confondues avec des armes à feu;
The clause says "that risks being confused with firearms". But I've also seen kids shooting air soft guns (les armes soft air) in the local woods and I doubt they have permits. So it is probably up to you about how legal you want to be.

It is a weapon according to the law, but normally you do not need a permit. Art. 10 WG Also kids may have weapons but there are strict regulations (Art. 23 OArm).

Re: Air Rifle/BB Gun

There was some controversy about BB guns few years back. I think they can now be confiscated by the police because they look identical to real weapons and in a crucial moment could be mistaken as such.

So just don't walk around on the street with such a gun in your hand, otherwise you'll have a large contingent of police around you.

Re: Air Rifle/BB Gun

stumbled onto this thread while searching for a place to buy a pellet rifle or pistol, (my father in law would like me to dispatch his very old hens before he puts them in the forest for the fox.)
Thanks for the info Runningdeer and aSwissInTheUS.

side note:

I brought a compound bow with me when I moved here 3 years ago... funny they didn't consider it "arms" when going through customs, they work well shooting Iowa whitetail deer and turkeys. .. I've since brought back 2 more (gifts from parents) and a kid version for my daughter.

There's this place in St. Gallen

It's only about 4 hours by train from Vaud.
