| | | Zurich Oerlikon - Where to get my Groceries/Food Shop from?
Hi 1st day in Zurich. Just in Oerlikon nr the main train station. Nipped over to the Coop just outside the station.
Found the store small, expensive and with a very poor choice of food items.
Can anyone suggest anywhere else for my weekly food shop (Dont have a car, but dont mind lugging bags about)
Also cant beleive its 10CHF (£7) for two pork chops? Scandalous.

Only 10 chf?!?!!? Quick, tell us where!
Welcome to Swiss sticker-shock. If you want cheap grub go to Germany, but it's not "Swiss quality".

Secondly, don't go for your regular shopping at the train/gas station! (Exception being the Shopvilles in the main station/Stadelhofen, you can find normal shops there also open on weekends)
Now, since you are in Oerlikon, it is not really big - if you walk around half an hour each day or weekend, you will get to know the place in no time!
Right opposite the station, next to the Swissotel you will find a rather large Migros, if you pass the Burger King (as seen from the train station) and turn right, you will find a few more, I think there is an Aldi there as well, plus another big Coop at the corner....
Plus - every Saturday you have the big market right behind the Swissotel, no two minutes walk from the station - my definite recommendation, but also depending on your budget..
You'll find your way in no time..

The Saturday morning market is amazing, I'll be there bright and early. I'm always amazed how much cheaper the fruit and veg is there than at the Coop downtown, and the quality is sooo much better.

Pretty early - like 7 am I think. The earlier you go the better, after 9:30 it's pretty busy and after 11 people start packing up.

The big COOP is on the other side of the rail-station, which is neighboured by an ALDI, OR you go from the small COOP towards Sternen Oerlikon where you can find a COOP City which is neighboured by a LIDL. Or you go from the small COOP west along the hotel there and you will arrive at a fairly large MIGROS. If you on a Saturday morning look from the rail-station to the hotel, right behind the hotel will be the weekly open market

IMHO, Oerlikon is a little gem of a spot.
1. Rolli's - the best place to eat steak in Zurich
2. The market
3. In "new" Oerlikon you have a huge Coop as well as an Aldi....and there is a Lildl as well.
4. The BBQ sauce shop behind the station.
5. The Asian shop just one block away from Rolli's (great for Indian spices, rice and fresh Thai veg....chilli peppers in particular)
6. Plus there are a couple of good gas stations that are open on Sundays of youre in a jam.

There's also a Denner on Baumackerstrasse near the Post Office. (2 mins from the train station)
It's less stressful to think about costs in terms of minutes worked. I used to have to work an hour to pay for my lunch (in the UK). Now it's like 25 minutes.

+1 for the Aldi behind the station. We go there regularly for our shop and find it quite cheap.

The market is there on Wednesdays as well, although all of the vendors are not. The selection is still wonderful.
Sorry to say, food here is very expensive (especially meat). At least it's great quality.

And meat is over the top I suggest you give the many Turkish, Arab, Indian, exYugo, Iranian shops a chance. The prices in those shops in some cases are lower even than in Lidl and Aldi, and their stuff is good (often very spicy ! )

Fantastic, where are these foreign shops? Any near Oerlikon?
Also are there any cheaper supermarkets? Ive used the Coop nr Oerlikon station, and also the Coop city, just 100m in front of Oerlikon station.
Both of these are quite small?
I am wondering if the prices in these smaller food shops are more expensive than the larger ones?
For example back in the uk if i pop into a small tescos, spar, co-op or something like that, i will pay more money than if i go to one of the massive tescos, sainsburys or asda's.
Is it the same here?
I need to find affordable meat....cant live without it
