Re: Swim Across Lake Zurich

This may sound naive but what is there to know? You get in one side and get out the other, trying not to drown on the way..... cell phone in a waterproof bag may come in handy! Also google map it (for distance) and have a neon-red buoy like divers own to drag behind you so boats can see you in time....

Or are there actual rules?

The idea is to do it in an organised way. In the 60ies and 70ies, we did it individually. I did it the first time in about 1966 with two friends from Wollishofen to Tiefenbrunnen and then alone twice from Wollishofen and twice from Mythenquai. To walk around the lake barefoot was not so much fun, I freely admit

Better to go on the day they organise it, did you read about the swimmer last week who was run over by a lake steamboat?

The main thing, if you do it alone, is to observe the movement of the scheduled ships and schedule your swim to the time when at least two just have gone towards Bürkliplatz and at least two have gone up the lake. The rest is no big deal

Re: Swim Across Lake Zurich

Just saw that due to the weather the swim across the lake has been cancelled until after the summer holidays (Wed, 22 August). Crossing my fingers that the weather improves by mid August.

Re: Swim Across Lake Zurich

I have a question related with this topic. Are there any open water swim races for not organised people (without racing license)? Not far from Zurich area (up to 100 km). There are many nice lakes but I haven't found any races, I'm looking for distance 2-5 km, only swimming.

Re: Swim Across Lake Zurich

I am confused about the ticket -- do you get your ticket/swim cap with a # on it when you go to Mythequai to check in at 2 pm on Wednesday? Is it advised to go a lot earlier than 2 pm to be one of the first with a swim cap and a start time? The web site said 10,000 swimmers max -- I would hate to show up at 2 pm and then not have my number called till 5:30 pm -- any advise/experience?

You register when you arrive. Arriving at 2pm should be fine. I've turned up at 4.30 in past years and not had a problem registering.

You get all the stuff (cap, number, chit for your bag transportation to the other side, voucher for your victory risotto) when you register. Very efficient ladies on the desks.

Re: Swim Across Lake Zurich

That's a hell of a swim. How long that does take?

Makes swimming across the Rhine look like a kiddies' paddling pool. (And my company lost a few good men when we did that on a day out).

I tiddle across with a kind of breaststroke-meander-natter-with-my-mate-giggle-with-fellow-swimmers and manage it in under an hour. The speedy ones manage it in probably a little over 30 mins.

It is NOT a hell of a swim, but if you do it alone, a hell of planning. How long it takes depends on you.

From Wollishofen to Tiefenbrunnen it is (depending on the swimmer) between 40 and 70 minutes, from Mythenquai to Tiefenbrunnen between 30 and 45 minutes

Indeed it was grim because of all the CVs I had to start ploughing through again...

Naturally, now I insist that candidates have the good old 25-yard breast stroke certificate. (Who cares about PhDs...)
