Would this work in a Swiss power outlet?

http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-s...AdIdZ395887142

Hi guys,
I am totally lost on this case and it would help me a lot if you can verify that this power plug adaptor can let me plug in my laptop into the Swiss outlet.

It looks really funky. Only has 2 of those circular prods, whereas I think there are 3 in the outlets for Switzerland.

Thank you!

In switzerland we have plugs with two or three prods. So, I guess you could use it but it won't have any earthing, as far as I know.

It will work. Your laptop has three pins and the adapter has two. your middle pin (ground pin) will be covered up by the adapter and won't disturb when you are plugging in here.

I should mention that you should be very careful when plugging and unplugging these adapters from the wall. Make sure you "pull" from the very back of the adapter or just unplug your computer from the adapter before removing the adapter from the wall. One time I was careless and pulled with my whole hand, my fingers wrapping around the front of the adapter, near but still not touching the live pins. The shock sent me to my knees and i almost went unconscious.

Re: Would this work in a Swiss power outlet?

It may work, depending on the diameter and spacing of the pins, as EU has larger pins that are further apart than CH. But from the looks, I'd say no.

Yes, it will work, but it may not be 'safe' due to the lack of an earth pin. If you're using appliances normally requiring an earth then extra care should be taken.

Alright, I decided against it.
I'll probably just go to a store in Switzerland and buy a replace power cord for my laptop.

Is there a electronics store that you guys would recommend that I should go for this?

Thank you!

Many electrical supply stores will have this. Take your cord with you to make sure the replacement fits. Although I've used an adapter like the one you have in going from switzerland to the us.

If your laptop power cord has two pieces - one that goes from the laptop and ends in a transformer (box), and another piece that connects to the box and plugs into the wall, you only have to replace the latter piece. I'm assuming your power cable goes from 110-240volts and 50-60hz.

Naah, you'll be fine with that one for a laptop.

Re: Would this work in a Swiss power outlet?

Hi,

I don't know if this is for a pc or mac, but in either case it should work fine. if it's a mac, Apple makes a kit that basically does the same thing. What I was sold by Apple was the "World Travel Adapter Kit" you uncouple the American plug from the apple transformer and clip on one of the 6 or so different ends that come in the kit. There are two end fittings with just two round pins. The instructions say that the large diameter pins are for for Korea, while the small ones are for continental Europe. None of the plugs in this kit have the 3rd prong for the ground pin. It's plugged into my mac this very minute and working fine.

The Apple part number is MB974ZM/B and I paid 39.00 CHF at the Apple Store in Geneva

If it's for the PC, the power cord probably won't come apart in the middle (Dell is a good example of this) in which case you have to get a whole new power cord specific to the country you want to plug into, or go with an adapter like the one pictured in your post. In any case, the transformer (the big box in the middle of the power cord) will have a label on it that tells what input voltage it will accept (probably 120-240 v 50-60 hz.) and it will then transform it to a reduced d/c voltage and a few milliamps.

I would just read what it says on the transformer, and if that's what's coming out of the wall, then it will work fine.

Re: Would this work in a Swiss power outlet?

Look, easiest is to buy a power strip with a cable end at home, cut off the plug, and buy a new one for CHF 1.10 here!

Did that when I went on vacation to the US last month.
