It depends on your definition of dangerous I guess.

On the swiss scale this is probably towards the more dangerous end (up there with sking and the such like) but on the english scale i would say its pretty low down (no more dangerous than going to the olympic park for the afternoon) - true though, there's likely to be drug and alcohol consumption towards the evening but the only danger these people pose is to themselves

If you do come, the 'safest' way to do it is in a group.

The safest way is to watch it on tele züri, but seems it is the same as every year.
Depends on the weather that day more people will get into trouble (deydration, no sun protection and way too much of drugs in any form, starting from alcohol
to these little nice nasty ones).
If is not your type of music or your form spending your weekend, don't go for it.
Makes much more fun for all participating groups.

I initially planned to go, but my friend said that since we'll be here for another 3 years, it's not rush to go this year. We are still new to Switzerland (only just passed a month since we arrived).

It's fairly safe relatively speaking. Lots of crowds, lots of young impressionable people mixed with a fair bit of alcohol and some drugs....It's not exactly Disney World's Main Street parade.

Just make sure one stays hydrated, and if you are near to the floats, ear plugs are necessary. I once read that some of the floats carry in the area of 10 kW of amplifying sound equipment.

I think you'll be as safe as any other day considering that the various Swiss authorities put a lot of effort into safety.

They've also published cautions on drinking plenty of water, wearing closed footwear, drug taking, etc etc.

But, today's the day I now wish I'd planned to get away. I've forgotten how the DOOF DOOF [Australian urban slang for techno or dance music played too loudly - not as in the German meaning of 'stupid', although...] rhythm travels.

I'm 6 kilometres from the Street Parade 'epicentre', I have all windows closed and yet the DOOF DOOF is permeating every millimetre of my private space. And the official start hasn't even begun - and then there's still 12 hours of it. How Swiss I have become. Is there no consideration for us 'oldies', who want a Saturday lunchtime nana-nap?
