New "improved" speed cameras

I suspect that this is going to top up the government coffers quite nicely.

Re: New "improved" speed cameras

Too many speed cameras already and all in the wrong spot, except wait they are for revenue raising not safety, so if you want the government to have more revenue yes more are good if you want sager roads we need less of these!

Re: New "improved" speed cameras

I see zero impact on road safety from the existing ones and I do about 25,000 kms a year. Swissplod already gets enough income for their summer BBQ from the existing cameras.

Just wait until such smart cameras are installed in apartments - monitoring time of toilet flushes, frequency of laundry loads, correct placement of material for recycling, decibel output levels of animals and small children, the correct consumption of cheese...

Re: New "improved" speed cameras

Sorry but I don't agree. How can you say there is zero impact just because you do 25k a year?

Surely the only way to do that is look at stats. for before and after the camera was positioned.

People drive too fast AND, which I find worse, tail gate all the time here.

If they could improve the camera's ticket tail gating the roads would definitely be safer.

When I had my course control I took some lessons with an instructor, she told me that pedestrians don't have RIGHT OF WAY, you should give them right of way but not by any means.

Not yielding to the traffic to the right? How the camera will know if the car on the right stalled? Or I'm gonna have to spend 5 minutes waiting for the guy/girl to start the car etc?

I think what he's saying is Speed Cameras are not necessarily positioned in order to maintain road safety.

For example most speed cameras I see are positioned out in the sticks at the end of a long straight just around the corner tucked behind a tree and a road sign. Surely it would be better for 'road safety' to be in and around villages schools etc...??

I agree with the tail gating though, it's ridiculous how often I get butt checked here!!!!!

It doesn't matter where they are... If you are going too fast then you are going too fast.. simple. Many drivers think they have a right to go faster than the speed limit and make up there own "safe" maximum speed.

My main issue here is road travel is far more deadlier than plane or train but for some reason it's largely tolerated. There is little coverage to raise awareness of this compared to the mass hysteria that typically follows a train or plane crash.

On average 7 people are killed on UK roads every day. Excessive speed is the main cause of this. Fact.

Oh what nonsense. Are you really suggesting that doing 95 in a 30 zone past a school is no worse than doing 106 in a 100 limit on a motorway?

What? how can you you even compare air or train travel to motoring, the 2 have totally different variables.

planes, 2 people in control ( well, they press the auto pilot button 5 seconds after take off) and engineers that can go to prison if they have made mistakes.

trains on fixed routes , 1 driver and system is virtually all automated.

10000000000000000000000000% different from driving a vehicle.

Excess speed is the primary contributor in only 5-14% of road accidents, depending on your source.

Re: New "improved" speed cameras

Has anyone actually read the article.. this is no ordinary speed camera, this is the Licence Terminator

Trafistar SR590 - a new speed camera able to detect multiple traffic offences.
  • Can simultaneously monitor the speed of 22 cars in four lanes
  • Drivers who tailgate
  • Trespass into bus or cycle lanes,
  • Fail to give way to pedestrians or to traffic to the right,
  • Overtake in a dangerous manner,
  • Failure to halt at a stop sign
  • Unauthorised turns

Yes, I read the article. Doesn't sound as bad as all that.

TBH I'm quite happy about most of those, so as far as I'm concerned they're no different from ordinary speeding ones. Anyway, they'll also show up on my GPS camera-alert, so no biggie.

Personally, I'd love to see how a singe source camera with primative trigger sensors can successfully provide convictable proof beyond doubt for at least half of these.

Re: New "improved" speed cameras

if it really was for road safety they would be in bright colours like UK and not drab green or grey to fit perfectly with the surroundings...

just look at the ones around bern or luzern, built into the side walls in the same colour.

BUT>>>> another way of thinking is if people dont know where they are, they drive at the limit "in case" a camera is around.....

which doesnt tend to work.
