The one that works wonders for me if I can't get into a pool, ie you are at the office, school etc. get a face towel, damp it with cold water and put it in the back of your neck. You will feel so refreshed |

Heaven | | | | | Temperatures during the day up in our mountains (only 950m here) can be just as hot during the day - but always cool down at night- pheew- and those old houses seem to keep cool in Summer and warm in Winter, thanks to the very thick stone walls.
Kristin + OH come and stay for a few days if it gets unbearable! Going swimming at lac des Taillères this pm.

I acquire friends with a swimming pool and spend the day at their house. For the working days, I have an air-conditioned office.
First thing, open all doors and windows to let in the cool morning air. Then close all the doors and windows. Keep the shutters sun-side closed. For my attic windows, I have blinds with a reflective surface. In the evening, once the outside temperature is lower than the inside, open the doors and windows once more.
Cool/cold shower before bed. Sleep under a light sheet.

Lots of places to go for a swim in Neuchatel area - of course lots of beaches all around, some with pebbles, some with sand (like Yverdon, Yvonand, Portalban, La Tene too). Plus lots of swimming-pools - Nid-du-Croz in Neuchatel, and near me the Piscine des Combles, between Couvet and Boveresse- Olympic size, with diving boards, kiddies areas, great paddling pool for toddlers with slide, large lawned area with mature trees for shade, snack bar and volleyball area.
You can also swim the the peat lake of Les Taillères near la Brévine - the peat water never looks clear but is very clean and leaves your skin so soft. Take plastic shoes, the pebbles are rough.
Across the border, there is Lac St Point near Pontarlier - which has a swimming-pool both indoor and outdoors and lake swimming too + you can rent windsurfs, etc.
And river swimming in the Doubs just on the other side of the border in Villers-le-lac (France) near Les Brenets.

In my country, it was common to find misting fans ( in outdoor restaurants and the like ). Wonder if they have them here.
I saw plenty in hotter countries like Spain.

An ice cold beer would taste great just now!
Here's how I'm told the Swiss do it. Fill the tub with cold water and periodically take a dip in it.

Luke warm unsweatened mint tea, loads of it, works for me.. Generally, herbs are nice. Anything really cold will make my body work harder to compensate and be even hotter just after. Uni libraries are usually nice and cool, old buildings.
Adults will always cope, can be little difficult for little kids and older folks. I get the slushies you throw in the freezer (3fr yank store in Nyon), and make my own popsicles from fruit smoothies, the plastic little popsicle containers from Migros are great.

I was told to pull down the blinds and close the windows on the side where the sun is out but open the windows on the side of the house without sun.
As the sun moves around reverse the process. This keeps the circulation in the rooms with the most optimally cool air without it heating from the side where the sun is blazing...
Works wonders so far and no need for aircon!

it can be difficult to fill yourself with more than 4-5 litres of water everyday.
Other things that I try are :
In Food :
Drink Butter Milk
Eat Cucumber
Eat black Raisins
Others:
Swim
Wet your face, hands, feet and leave it to try dry...
I was told once that Icecream actualy is momentarily cold. But it adds heat to your body. I am not sure .. never investigated it ... |

Oh, and olives. I eat salty food like olives and sundried tomatoes, and drink a lot, to load up on salts one sweats off. Not sure why but it perks me up when I get sluggish in heat.

If you have a patio outside your house, or even a balcony, wet it - the subsequent evaporation will create a 'cool wall' just outside.
