Anyone in Fribourg??

Hello all-

I moved to Fribourg in June and got married almost 6 weeks ago. I am just wondering if there is anyone in Fribourg or surrounding that wants to throw a frisbee, get a beer, etc. Im finding the Swiss (other than my wife, ofcourse) a little hard to make friends with.

Have a great day,

Dave

Re: Anyone in Fribourg??

Yeah not a bad idea these "anyone from [insert name of town that isn't Zurich or Geneva]" threads. Gives a chance for people from the smaller towns to assemble in one place and not have the feeling like they are alone. Maybe using the search combined with follow up PMs to the members to join the thread is a good strategy.

And once everyone is assembled on the thread then you can, well, go do something else I suppose

Hi Nick and Dave

My husband and I may be moving to Fribourg. Just a couple of quicky questions - what is it like?? And is it easy to rent a single house as we have 3 bouncy boxer dogs??

What areas do you recommend we look at to live?? And by your thread is it that difficult to make friends?

Cheers from ozzie and english

Hi Dave! If you do not already have plans for tomorrow morning - there will be some Ultimate practice in Murten by the lake @ 10:30am. A great opp for you and your wife to meet some nice like-minded folk in the area - cheers!

P.S. Ooooops, dare I forget to mention!!! The Beach House Bar is a stones throw away from the practice field for a beer and good chin-wagging following a good work out!

Hi Ozzie, and welcome to Fribourg maybe?

To answer your questions, 1) what’s it like? Well we personally find it fine but then perhaps we don’t ask or look for to much, it has good restaurants, bars, cinema’s (films in English) Theatre productions (in French) a yearly carnival, a yearly Jazz festival, and a fair amount of other stuff going on throughout the year. The ski slopes are half an hour away, lakes the same.
Shopping is the same everywhere and you can get just about everything.

As to housing, well that depends on how much you plan to use public transport or not. If you want to rent a house then these tend to be in the surrounding villages and towns usually about 10 – 20 mins from Fribourg, houses with gardens are not difficult to find and price depends on size I would say CHF 2000-3000 /month.
We live in Marly about 10 mins from the centre of Fribourg by bus (15min cycle) it is quite self sufficient having most facilities (Badminton , tennis indoor/outdoor, football fields, baseball triangle, ice skating rink, athletics track, basketball court etc. I think a lot of towns around have most of these facilities as well. There is also a great golf course 20 mins away with stunning views and two others 30 mins away. Villars sur Glane is a popular place to live but it is mostly new appartments. Do a search on this forum for housing and you will find plenty of links to online estate agents.

Of course there are people who are bored stiff with Fribourg and find it a small town with not much going on so it really all depends on what you want and expect.
As to making Friends, well that also depends on how much effort you are prepared to put in like everywhere.

Below are some links to give you a feel of Fribourg.

All the best
Nick.
PS Dave has left and gone back to the States (something about not liking the beer as I remember!)

Re: Anyone in Fribourg??

I've got to agree with Nick. Fribourg is a nice place with plenty to do, especially if you like outdoor life. There are some stellar places for a beer or a meal. As far as making friends, I wouldn't say it's any harder than anywhere else in Switzerland. Like Nick, I married a local but still found it hard to make significant friends.

And the beer is great. Nick's just pissed I left him high and dry and without any help keeping the Cardinal supply low in the city.

Re: Anyone in Fribourg??

Hi Guys

Many thanks for your great reply. Well the good news is that it looks like we are coming - today is the deadline and we will have some buddies prior to even going - great stuff!!!!!

I have one more question - actually that is not true - once I arrive I think I will have 20 million questions. But this is one of the big ones.

My husband and I have been living in Dubai for 15 years and I have my own company - Lotus Designs - www.lotusdesigns.ae - I am a certified Master practitioner in Feng Shui trained by Masters Lillian Too and Raymond Lo. Obviously, with much sadness and mixed emotions I have to begin to close my business down - because of the move.

So the question is - is Feng Shui big in Switzerland???

Thanks again for all of your kind kind help, it was much appreciated and assisted us greatly. Will keep you all posted as to the yes or no.

Cheers Kerri.

its starting to catch on in a big way. A colleague of mine does this in her spare time, roughly 4 days a month & it returns around 800chf a day. I hear that in Zürich, some practioners are making upwards of 1,000 chf per day on this....

Hi Polorise

Many thanks for your quick reply. I am glad to hear that F/S is getting big in Switzerland and perhaps that I may be able to continue my work.

I am sure you understand that when somebody is lucky enough to find something that they truely love and absolutely enjoy doing - its very sad to think that you may not be able to continue it.

But hopefully by your reply, I may get a chance to continue in Switzerland.

Have a great day,
Cheers Kerri.

Kerri,

I suggest you look through some of the forums on here. Depending on your nationality, your spouses nationality etc, this will affect the type of permit you will have & your legal entitlement to work or not.

http://www.englishforum.ch/permits-visas-government/

http://www.englishforum.ch/employment/

& heres general ones regards moving to Switzerland :

Resources for those living in or moving to CH...

good luck, you will find plenty of help from the members on here.

Gyms And French Lessons

Hello

Well it looks we are definatley on our way to Fribourg. Wont be landing our feet there until October. So here is the start of my million and one questions. So before I start - a big thanks for everyones help and assistance - before I begin to annoy everyone - hahaha!!!

What gym can you recommend in Fribourg or any other areas and I need to learn French - I have looked at the Fribourg uni page but cant find anything about adult intense lessons in french.

Does anybody know of a uni or adult eduction site that provides 5 days a week intense French lessons that you could go from Beginner, Intermediate to advance etc... and it keeps running all year. I know Lusanne has a short language course over summer but it finishes late August and I dont think I will be there until October.

Anyway a big thanks,
cheers

Hi! You might want to have a look at this school in Fribourg http://www.vkhs.ch/. It is actually a University preparatory school but they offer intensive (= 5 half-days a week) French courses too (I took the German one).
