what to do with leaves?

Hi Guys,

When we moved in, there was a compost dumpster in the yard (green with a cartoon hedgehog on it). I've not needed to use it to date, but after today's wind, I've got about 20 dumpsters worth of leaves down in the yard. Any idea how to get rid of the 95% that won't fit in the dumpster? Can I put them in lawn and leaf bags and put them in the regular trash?

When I was a kid, we just burned them, but I'm imagining helicopters and sirens converging rapidly if I tried that here.

Make a pile of leaves in a garden corner for Hedgehogs and other creatures to live in over winter?

I usually just rake mine into the neighbour's yard. Then they're his problem.

He's Swiss. I figure he knows what to do.

Re: what to do with leaves?

Do you have a shredder? I shred my leaves, then compost. They break down more easily this way and take up a fraction of the space.

But as Smoky suggests, do leave at least a bit for the wild critters who are facing a cold winter...

Re: what to do with leaves?

Every windy evening, when dark, take a few sack loads and discretely tip them out in the street to disperse in the wind.
They will be collected with the road sweeping truck.

If you have no green collection in your area, then there should be a large container at your local recycling depot for garden waste.

Thanks, I'm in Geneva Canton. Where do I get the bags, are they just green garbage bags from Coop or what? Also, how do I find out when the collection date is?

Sorry for the stupid questions, It's my first winter here and I couldn't find the answers I needed with the search function.

Questions are never stupid

You can find green bags in Coop or Migros (perhaps more in the DIY part) and the collection dates should be indicated on the website of your town/village.

Or you can bring it here

Re: what to do with leaves?

We have to pay to dispose of our green waste, believe it or not! I am hoping this will change (or be hidden in the taxes) starting in Jan. when our town merges with neighboring towns.

I think it is best to approach your municipality and ask, or of you have the little booklet that comes with information from it, I am sure you will find the info there.

Edit: bah I was late!

Was parked on the street today just off Route du Chene in Geneva, and saw a lady burning a pile of leaves in her front yard. Go figure.

Re: what to do with leaves?

Not sure if you live in Geneva city proper or in one of the many communes in the Canton, but you should check first with your local commune offices, they should have the info and perhaps it is already on their website.

Here is the webpage for recycling compost in the city of Geneva, if you live in its boundaries.

http://www.ville-geneve.ch/themes/en...agers/compost/

Basically, they will give you free of charge one of these recipients, green with hedgehog logo on it, for recycling leaves and other similar compostable waste.

My green bin is so full I need to borrow some kids who want to stomp on the leaves.

We already have the largest container available! It is the size used for an apartment building.
