Basel Love Stories - Inspire the Newly Single

I split up with my boyfriend yesterday. Hopeful stories of finding new love In Basel would be appreciated right now. I'm 30 and a lot of my friendship group is linked to him.

Re: Basel Love Stories - Inspire the Newly Single

I met my husband through an online forum so you are half there already

As to how you can meet new people thats easy. Go to one of the many events organised here. No problems language wise

I see events for Zurich, but not Basel. It's no big deal to go to Zurich, but are there events for Basel that I am missing?

Re: Basel Love Stories - Inspire the Newly Single

I met my man on EF. It started 6 years ago when I sold him some bookshelves and just over 2 years ago after 4 years of bumping into him on various events, he pounced on me in the cinema on what I now realise he took to be a "date".

That is very sweet! Why did it take 4 years?

That's about average for an Englishman to go from 'first meeting' to 'would you like to go out sometime?'

Haven't you ever seen a film with Hugh Grant in it?

This would seem to indicate that you are familiar with his whole repertoire! I'm not sure that's something to boast about.

Would you prefer us to hump every female (if you swing that way) leg at first sight?

The forum's a good place to start in the Expat community - I'm sure there are many singles here. Goes double if you speak only English. Although you need not restrict yourself, you could focus on social events (or any event) in the Basel area to meet new people.
You could also try dating sites like www.okcupid.com (it's totally free) or www.swissfriends.ch. Hey, I know it sounds lame but I've had some success (met some nice people online and off) there and if I can anybody can!
Then there are common-interest clubs, nightclubs, bars where meeting someone can happen quite easily. If your neighbourhood has a community activity agenda, do participate in what interests you.
I reckon about 15-20% of the population is single in Switzerland, so finding someone should be feasible at least!
There are options. Good luck!

I'm under the impression the protocol in Switzerland is the usual international one (say hi etc), but go right ahead. That won't be weird AT ALL.

Are we also to assume from this, that you learnt "all you know" from Mr.Grant, too?

I didn't know he had such an extensive fanclub in Switzerland.

Ok, no problem but it isn't in Basel, is that still ok?

Anyway, I was young and free and I decided after being pressured by friends to join a group on an online forum of expats. Every month, they organized a dinner for the newbies to help them integrated in the group. I went there with a friend who was one of the people organizing it.

I saw that sexy tall guy with the big nose in a suit and I thought he was very cute. Because of a bad breakup a couple of months back, I wasn't interested in anything with anyone so I was pretty comfortable and myself. I had a great evening in his company, an australian girl who became a great friend and flatmate and an other 12-15 people. After that dinner, few weeks passed and the Australian girl convince us all to meet to the monthly party the forum used to do in a bar. We were a good 150-200 people. The same 5-6 people from the dinner got together again and we became great friends.

That evening, my husband came to the party with a guy I met at the dinner. The guy got drunk and told me some stupid stuff. I told him off and he got upset and decided to leave. My husband asked me out.

And time did the rest.

He's from Yorkshire and couldn't use his normal seduction techniques of taking me t'local and giving me a growler and a pint of ale.

Can't say I'm a fan of Grant, but as Sting so eloquently puts it:

I resolved to call her up
A thousand times a day
Ask her if she'll marry me
In some old fashioned way

But my silent fears have gripped me
Long before I reach the phone
Long before my tongue has tripped me
Must I always be alone?
