Crime in Geneva - article in Le Temps

There is a very good article in Le Temps today discussing how crime in Geneva has become a worry for local business people and the fact that many foreign business people are now afraid of coming to Geneva for meetings. Any one else read it?

This has been a known fact for years and discussed ample times in various newspaper. Only the Mercer study folks don't seem to be aware of this.

And evidently Mr Rambo.

Keep away from the main station area, or be careful!

Re: Crime in Geneva - article in Le Temps

Without any doubt Geneva is the most dangerous city in Switzerland. I feel much safer in Zürich, Basel, Bern or even Lausanne. Also Geneva is probably the dirtiest city in Switzerland.

The problem of the very rich and high tech canton de Genève is that it is surrounded by a very poor rural neighboring France (France voisine). I don't live in Geneva but my impression is that Geneva has become the most Francophobe city in Europe.

Interestingly every rude person I met at a Migros or Manor in Geneva or at Geneva Cointrin airport happened to be a French citizen.

Every Genevan will tell you pretty much the same thing that in Geneva:

- there are way too many French frontaliers stealing jobs from local residents (Geneva has the highest unemployment rate in CH)

- roads and border crossings are congested, air is very polluted (thanks mostly to Diesel emissions from crappy 74 and 01 French registered cars)

- justice is too lenient toward thieves, drug dealers and other criminals (Les Pâquis, Plainpalais...)

- Corruption in local government is very high (thanks to people like Michèle Künzler). Probably the most corrrupted canton. Google: "Genferei" or "Genevoiserie"

- police is understaffed

- no adequate border protection (Geneva has the highest burglary rates in Switzerland, most burglars, gas station robbers come from France)

- too many French criminals coming from crime-ridden cities such as Annemasse, Grenoble and Lyon

- too many illegal aliens

- Geneva's motorists (thanks to their French mentality) are Switzerland's worst drivers

I must say i was vey disappointed when visiting Geneva. Even though it is a beautiful city, it's very dirty compared to the rest of CH and it is also pretty scary especially around the train station.

Re: Crime in Geneva - article in Le Temps

Geneva's not more or less safe than other Swiss towns. From time to time you've got *something big* which is printed on the front of newspapers, usually made by french criminals, but that's all.

Perhaps a bit more "rumors" since the creation of some political parties...

But it's dirty. Yeah. Definitely.

And full of roadworks. That's the problem : roadworks....

They should un-exempt the UN and its staff from paying taxes and remove diplomatic immunity from them. Then use the extra tax income to tidy the place up.

I live in Geneva, and think that it's probably not any worse than anywhere else that I've lived in terms of crime, and it's a good deal better than some!

It's a big city, by swiss standards, so it's going to have more big city problems than some little one horse town, no matter the nationality.

However, I will agree that traffic congestion is the worst that I've ever seen!........and there are cigarette butts all over the place...........and graffiti......and French speaking people......

and then the UN would just shut up shop in Geneva and move somewhere else.....and not all UN staff have diplomatic immunity, in fact the majority of them dont!

Having just come back to Geneva from a business trip in West Africa, I find the above descriptions laughable. I'm surprised some people go out without their mummy.

traffic congestion in Geneva ? Do not forget that the population density per square-kilometer is almost twice the one of Zürich. And just as in Zürich, the basically beautiful lake forces the road traffic around the "exit"

Second that! Terrible how people get spoiled and forget where they come from. Most of the world can dream of safety level of even Geneva. It might be worst big city in CH (what about Basel?) regarding these things, but - been in Zurich, could go back anytime, and I would never chose it over Geneva.
Swiss/French are simply great people, bad drivers (french) and all that makes this mix quite unique.
Geneva is what it is, with it's positives and negatives but apparently some people should stop reading/watching too much media and get a life (without mummy)...

Just to put the record straight, the Regions of Rhône-Alpes and Franche-Comté are NOT particularily poor regions of France, and Rhône-Alpes rather above French average

Lyon of course has a known crime problem, but Grenoble is not worse off than comparable cities in Switzerland

Francophobia ? What many Genevans resent is that the many French residents in Geneva have made Geneva into a Protestant city with a Catholic majority

Schaffhausen in the past (1910s, 1920ies, 1950ies) had a high burglary rate, resulting from burglars coming over from Germany. And that was ages before Schengen. If you know your ways in areas like Schaffhausen and Geneva and Ticino you alwasy could slip in and out without being controlled. There were more or less professional smugglers in both Cantons, Schaffhausen and Ticino. In all three Cantons there were border-stretches more or less open. Our grandmother in Schaffhausen once, in the early 60ies, encouraged us, somewhere up in the Randen, to trace for border stones, and gave us a piece of chocolate for each one we detected. In the end, she took us over to a nice Gasthof on the German side for a bit of sausage and an AfriCola. Border-control-chaps ? Häääääh

justice btw. cannot be lenient with people who are not caught
