Re: Learner Drivers make me nervous

I love how, in my town (St. Louis) there are BILLIONS () of Learner Drivers but once they earn the right to throw away the plates they drive like the never learned a thing!

Non Learner drivers.... (on French PLates :O ) make me nervous!

Yes i know i shouldnt single out an entire country but...

I also feel nervous if some one is on the inside lane of a roundabout and im on the outside lane. I dont trust the inside lane guy not to turn into the side of my car! Issues!

Re: Learner Drivers make me nervous

I'll tell you who is worse than learner drivers - mobility drivers.

If you don't own a car you simply are not getting the practice you need to be competent on the road. And even if you are in a mobility car the speed limit does still apply.

Mobility cars spend their entire time either above the limit being driven like cloth is being touched - or dawdling along because the driver is unsure whether to take the next right or the one after.

Mobility cars all come with faulty indicators.

And don't get me going on Smart cars - do Swiss racing drivers get given one at 18 years old and told to go out and practice??

You think learner drivers are bad, try dealing with student pilots!

There must be something to the Mobility driver thing - I'm one of them and I'm amazed at the scratches and bumps on the cars. I have also had several utterly shot gearboxes, the last car I drove practically only went into first with a hammer! So a lot of my Mobility journeys end with phone calls to the service centre to say that they need to check the car. It's a shame as being careless with the cars will drive up rental prices in the long run.

I'm not a brilliant driver but I indicate, stick to the speed, don't text/phone and drive, look over my shoulder before changing lanes, don't tail gate (unless you are going 40 in the 50 zone), and generally focus on the driving part.

Actually, compared to the rest of the drivers in Zurich, that puts me above the average motorist

I don't know if it's actually carelessness or just sheer inability due to lack of practice.

It's a good thing that Mobility cars are bright red... I always try to keep double the distance from them on the road.

In the photo posted by the OP, I only see one person in the vehicle.

Doesn't there have to be second person? Or is that vehicle exempt, as is a motorbike?

Actually there are at least two people. Here is another photo showing the person in front. It is a bit difficult to see the person up top but there are two people in the vehicle.

Well, the cars are often really dirty, last time there were empty bottles on the back seats and they had been smoking in the car, the petrol tank is often not filled up as per the regulations - it's probably carelessness.

So far I've driven the same Combi twice (the second time the previous driver left the back seats folded down, but that was okay since I was moving a chair...) and a Transport. I book the automatics because yes, I am a newbie to Zurich and so I put my focus on navigating and looking for the invisible speed limit signs. But I stick to the same speed as the rest of the traffic, I don't do random lane changes, and I try not to drive *too* much like a tourist.

For the record I've driven everything in the past from motorbikes to small trucks but nothing will stop a tourist from looking like a tourist (or in this case a new immigrant).

You'll be glad to know Mobility has special rates for learner drivers... and yes, that is where we've been today. The car is fine. Excellent arrangement. Just 2 other drivers not respecting our priority on the roundabout but that is par for the course.
What's got my goat so far is being shouted at twice in car parks!
Did you know you can't actually park a car, get out to go pee or something & get back in without a raving lunatic shouting you are not allowed to practice in their car park? We weren't practicing. We were running an errand. Parked like any normal road user, got back in & was about to drive away. Fine, ok no errands with an L plate .. or take the plate off down the road, go park, go back up the road & put the plate on?
