Snake around Zurich Lake

This afternoon I was biking with kids along the Zurich lakeside jogging road, and then I saw a snake swam to the shore and slid into a hole by the lake. It's pale green with some patterns on the skin, over 1M in length and ~15cm in girth.

I wonder if there's any viper in Zurich lake, or they're just regular grass snake?

Anyhow, snakes in Western Europe are not dangeros unless they are an exotic species that have escaped from private owners.

Yes indeed, they're an endangered species here but they do exist (along with one or two other kinds of vipers I believe.) Their bite is poisonous but very rarely fatal.

Good news for the OP is that "his" snake definitely wasn't a Kreuzotter, since they only grow to about 80cm long.

M daughter told me that it was the size of a drainpipe with teeth like broadswords, she may have exaggerated a tad though.

The length is just a rough estimation, since it slid quickly into the hole. Anyhow, most snakes look similar to me so I can't really tell which it belongs to.

The Ringelnatter is at home in many vineyards in places like Stein-am-Rhein and in many lakes between Zürich and the Arlberg

Yes & they do swim very well; one overtook me when I was swimming in the Rhine some years ago - as Wolli wrote, they are harmless.

THIS

is a poisonous viper, which existed in German speaking Switzerland before WWII but later on only in the Ticino. Whenever in TI, we were told about this and that about them but never saw any one

only the perfectly harmless

How did they get eradicated from German speaking Switzerland? I have (mad) pictures in my head of post-war Germans with low meat rations sneaking over the border to steal the snakes

With the exception of the Kreuzotter which is very rare, that's why I didn't mention it. How did your daughter get bitten? (sorry to hear that, by the way)
