Sunny and snowy here, and the 3 kids are down with a bad cold and won't be able to enjoy it

Re: Weather!

Lovely and sunny here with a light dusting of snow on the ground.
Yesterday was nice and bright when we left in the morning and very grey with a covering of snow when we got back late in the afternoon ( exactly as had been forecast), no idea what happened in between here but it was pretty miserable in the Bern area all day yesterday.

Re: Weather!

It was horrible, damp and cold in Neuch yesterday, with wet sleet starting about 3pm.

After a grey start this morning, the sun is finally out at the top of the Neuchâtel Jura- with big patches of blue skies, and lots of fresh powder snow. All the xcountry pistes in the area are opened with excellent conditions and magnificient snowy-frosty scenery.

5pm- beautiful light as sun goes down- white clouds on big blue patches and orange-pink stripes on the horizon, contrasted by the snow and frosty clad trees of the woods. Gorgeous- the Jura at its best.

Re: Weather!

Only trying here for most of the day. Started to settle on the balcony about 3.30pm and starting to lay on the roads now. Just been out to have a quick balcony sweep before closing up the shutters for the night.

Steady snow all day in Basel, but only started to stick around 5pm. Looks like it's let up now and I assume it'll all melt away tomorrow

Forecast on meteocentrale.ch says otherwise, but who knows.

Another foot of snow overnight- but quite heavy. OH just come back from clearing the back drive- it took him over 1 hour even with the snow-blower. Still snowing

And in the meantime- the UK grinds to a halt because of a sprinkling of the white stuff again.

Well, what do you expect when they're still driving around on what are effectively summer tyres?

Yes, but how long did it normally take you.

OH got caught out the first year we were here. Had booked to have the tyres changed over, but the snow arrived two days before the appointment. Took him an hour and a half that evening to get from his workplace in Marly to home (some 15kms), tyres spinning all the way.

Re: Weather!

Well yes you have to allow for longer journey. But, although the right tyres make a huge difference, being used to driving on snow and how to keep in low gear, steady as you go, really helps too. I used to zig-zag in 2nd gear between all the cars stuck up the hill revving like crazy and getting nowhere, in my little red 2CV!

Here in Zürich the snow is gone. It is just plainly raining. I welcome that it no longer is so cold, but for the eye, the snow was nicer

Re: Weather!

It was pretty windy here during the night. Sounded like anything that wasn't nailed down was flying off down the road.
It has been sort if snowing all morning now.

I don't know what's happened in the UK over the years. When I was growing up in Yorkshire we had loads of snow every year and everybody managed to get to work or school even without snow tyres. The passes over the Pennines to Lancashire would sometimes be closed due to snow but it was always possible to go by alternative routes.
My mother was never not able to get to work and she drove through very narrow and windy country roads with very steep hill in a Ford cortina to get there in all weathers.
We used to go to secondary school by double decker bus over very steep hills and there was only ever one day when we had a 'snow day' as the bus couldn't get up the hill. The kids who lived in walking distance of the school were really annoyed as they had to go to school as normal.
I don't know if it's the modern cars or the bad road clearing services nowadays but people seem to have forgotten how to drive in snow.

Re: Weather!

Snowed all night, about another foot, and still snowing. OH and neighbour have cleared the whole of our road up to us with their snow blowers, as the council has not been yet and we are expecting visitors.

OH used to have to do all the rural home visits in bad weather, because the other partners didn't know how to drive in snow, as BM says. Must say swapping the Porsche (only a Boxter, but it was great fun)( for a 4x4 Discovery when we moved here was quite a good idea;

Later edit, 1.45 pm and it has stopped snowing- about another foot this morning- and the sun is now out. Wow and wow again. Conditions for xcountry skiing and downhill will be great in the Jura this week-end, with all smaller resorts opened- some snow but also sun predicted for tomorrow.

Edit at 5pm- the sun didn't last- heavy snow returned all afternoon, about 20cm more since 2pm! And snow forecast everyday for nex week! Snow it half-way up to the windows already. Penty of oil and wood, so will be fine. Might have to do something so BRITISH and cancel skiing tommorow due to SNOW

Re: Weather!

Ao about 1 metre of snow up in the Jura- with amazing shapes all over the countryside blown by the wind- and now brilliant sunshine. Head for the mountains, rent skis or snow-shoes, or just fo for a nice walk.. Not seen so much snow and such a winter wonderland for a long time. Hurrah.
