I actually used an umbrella today to shade me from the sun when hubby and I walked into Baden.

Re: Weather!

Seems Fribourg wasn't the first canton after all.

"Six cantons have already rolled out fire bans in and around forests with dry weather increasing the risk of blazes flaring.

The restrictions — already in place in Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Solothurn, Vaud, Valais and Grissons — also means fireworks and fires in designated outdoor fireplaces are a no-no."

Apparently it is the wrong kind of sun for the solar industry

Quote:
Switzerland’s solar energy reserves are also paradoxically suffering from the recent sunny weather, with the heat affecting photovoltaic plants. Power generation has marginally decreased from this source as a result of the wrong kind of hot temperatures: too hot, too fast.

Not just the solar industry, but Solar Impulse as well. Grounded until spring 2016.

Or why Switzerland must build a few new generation nuclear power plants as well as raising the dam levels in the Alps... Solar doesn't cut it, period.

There aren't any dam levels in the Alps. It is all slopes

Don't think that would necessarily help Noth. From DP's link:

"Swiss public television, RTS, has reported that the nuclear power stations at Mühleberg, Beznau and Leibstadt have been forced to reduce power output to avoid heating up the Rhine and Aare rivers with their waste water.

The environmental measure is designed to protect aquatic life in the rivers as waste water heats up in the hot weather.

“Climate change will increase the number of problematic weather extremes that aggravate the situation at nuclear power plants and increase the risk of failures,” said Greenpeace Switzerland spokesman Florian Kasser."

There will be on lake Geneva on 9th August though No fire risk there
Got an invitation from the commune for the Aug 1st events and fireworks. No mention of anything being cancelled.

But irrespective of the bans on fireworks, would there definitely be some on the lake? Trying to make some plans with friends for that evening!

I keep checking on water restrictions here in Vaud/Lausanne but so far I've seen nothing. I, and two other neighbors, watered our lawns today, but I felt kind of guilty. I didn't live here for the last "canicule" (heatwave) in 2003. Do they not start to regulate water usage for things like watering the lawn, washing the car, etc.?

I mean, it hasn't rained any significant amount in Lausanne in at least 4 weeks and it doesn't look like we can expect any for at least another 10 days.

As bad as it is, I just can't help thinking about all of those people vacationing in Tuscany. It's got to be 39 or 40 down there. Ugh.
We are near Rolle in Vaud and have had water restrictions for the last week or so. No sprinklers on the lawn but you can water your plants. It's the same at most of the communes in this area as far as I know.

Water restrictions? The lawn in our backyard looks like Australian bush ready to be set ablaze and they prohibit few drops of water to prevent it from happening? :/ Come on! We live by a huge water reservoir!

There are some thunderstorms right now on the Jura, but they seem pretty stationary
At least the wind is giving us some relief

Re: Weather!

Same in Neuch - today we had a lovely day swimming + picnic at Lac des Taillères- coolish 29C- finally had a few drops of rain on way back. Friends from UK are cycling back from Lac des T and might be a bit wet by the time they get here! Ooops just got through the door, and they are not too bad. Kettle on!

Re: Weather!

A few raindrops fell just now. Earlier (around 1530ish), there were some super ominous dark clouds and thunders... my neighbours were actually laughing when I told them that there would be thunderstorms by the looks of it. Seems as if they were right.

Edit at 1823: Lots of rain, accompanied by sunshine.
