Re: Weather!

Got back from holiday on Sunday and really wishing we'd stayed where we were.
It was a lovely 25-27° with a nice sea breeze where we were and we come back to the same stifling heat we had when we went away.

Kudos to my lovely Swiss neighbour who kept both the animals and garden alive despite the extreme heat. She did get to eat loads of lovel home grown tomatoes which all ripened in our absence. The tomatoes seem to be thriving in this weather.

Our weather station was showing this at 9.40 this morning. The probe is is in the sun at that time if day but still .

Put the probe in the shade on the northern side of the building. Try to mount it at around 2m height, away from windows and doors. This way it will live longer and will give you proper readings

Re: Weather!

44C on the patio now, in full sun- and at 950m in the Jura mountains! Another beach this afternoon methinks (1 different one every day for past week). Grass parched - just about managing to keep animals and plants happy for neighbour- but not lawn! Gawd nows how hot it is in Southern Corsica where they are!!!
Friends from UK just left to got camping in French Jura- chose a campsite with a lake and a pool! Not been able to have breakfast on patio once during their stay- but late dinners and bbq's have been great. Last night we had a fondue in a farm restaurant higher up on top of Jura- with magnificent sunset at 10.30pm- fabulous.

Thanks Einstein.
We do have one on the north side of our house (which has neither windows nor doors) actually and that one is currently reading 30.9° in the shade.
The sun probe ( East facing) does give an idea of just how hot it feels should I be out in the full sun though which I like to know.

Well Mrs Einstein, you have to explain how on earth 950masl you manage to have 30C while at 500 we have 27 :P And don't get me wrong, while i'm Einstein I'm also a meteorologist and have proper stuff installed in my garden in the white box

Can't explain that at all as unless there's been a massive change whilst we've been away and a mountain sprouted beneath us we're not at 950m.. We're much lower than that at lake level in an area with a current severe heatwave warning.
I think you're confusing me with Odile.

Indeed. We're at about 420m towards the north end of lake Neuchâtel.
Off to the beach with a Swiss friend this afternoon, one of those nice secluded little beaches that only the locals know about.

We were with our visitors at a lovely little secluded beach between Boudry plage and Colombier plage- wonderful.

Re: Weather!

We're pretty even at the moment, 28 out the front (west facing), 27 the back (east facing). But the west facing will probably get into the high 30s/low 40s by late afternoon/evening because it's in the full sun then. Temp gauage hit 41.9 again yesterday.

Thunderstorms and RAIN predicted for us from tomorrow afternoon. Hope the forecast is right this time. This heat is wearing me out.

Re: Weather!

Just come back from Canton Uri, having completed 60 km by foot (in 3 days) of the Swiss Path in very hot temperatures...and a 12kg backpack!
But it made the diving in the lake or the drinking from the mountain streams all the more special! Finished in Brunnen with a lovely thunderstorm and temperatures fit to humans...until I came back to Geneva last night

Re: Weather!

Came back from a 2-hour stand-up paddling tour around Nidau with my daughter. So fun! After finishing the tour we jumped in the lake and rode our bicycles home dripping wet. Love living with easy access to water in this kind of weather! We swim twice a day.

Re: Weather!

How do you stop being burnt to a frazzle on one of those stand up board???

BTW, how much is it to rent here? We went swimming in nearby France, at Les Grangettes on Lac St Point, the other day (take plastic shoes-pebbles and stones!) - the hire was as follows:

stand up board: 1 hr = 10E 2 hrs = 18 half-day: 25

Windsurf: 1hr = 15 E 3hrs = 30 6hrs = 50 - much more fun for me I have to say (you get frazzled too!)
cat: 25 / 60 /100
Laser: 20 / 40 / 60
kayak: 8 / 12 / 18
canoe: 10 / 15 / 25

They do group trips on the Doubs for 22E or 15 for under 15s kids
or day trips with lunch for 45 or 30, including lunch. Happy to do either if anyone fancies joining me- it's a really gorgeous trip down the Doubs.

Re: Weather!

And more to the point how are those stand up paddle boats fun? They seem inherently unstable and slow..

We wear UV-protection shirts and lots of sunscreen. Paired with our darker complexion we've suffered no sunburns.

Re: Weather!

Their lack of stability are part of the fun. Lots of screeching on our part whenever a boat sped by and created waves. As for the speed, that would depend on the person doing the paddling . Admittedly, mine was slow. We simply enjoy physical activities, being outdoors and water.

Pool has been a steady 26-28c for ages now - but still offers very good cooling - especially last thing at night before bed.

Only downside is that in these conditions it is chewing through the chlorine

Depends on where the temperature is taken - my 18,000l of water is showing 30°+ but that's using a floating thermometer, which reads just below the surface.
Go down a meter and it will be a few degrees cooler.

Using it in the evening means that the air temp. has dropped below the water temp., making it difficult to come out ..... only when wrinkling and shrinking occurs.

We were in Rome over the weekend; it was more like our site seeing trip turned into an endurance challenge against the heat. Rome in July never again.

Out of curiosity to those long time Swiss residence, where does this summer (so far) rank for hottest? It is a runaway winner for my 3 summers here.

It's the hottest I've experienced since the heatwave of 2003.
