Re: Weather!

Softly snowing up here- but the wind has dropped. Birds are loving the new big bird house we bought yesterday at Landi.

Re: Weather!

40cm of the white stuff here. Snow blowers all working. Piste inspectors skiing about to test everything (again!). Let's hope this is the proper start to the season this time!

Re: Weather!

Snowing here too now, light, but looks like it will settle. Temp guage is 2.1 so might not get high enough for it to melt.

Snowing quite heavily for a couple of hours- will be out first thing with shovels and the snowblower- how much will it be by then? Ah, winter at last, hurrah.

Re: Weather!

Gorgeous, sunny Winterwonderland and everything is twinkling - cross country skiing will be perfect this week-end and all 3 local ski areas should open- Métabief-Mt d'Or on French side (not far from Lausanne) is opening today with a special price of 7Euros for the lift pass. Les Rassed in Vaud (above Yverdon) should open tomorrow too, and hopefully also the Neuchâtel ski areas too- at Buttes-La Robella (2 mins walk from train station, with ski/boot hire at bottom).

My skis are pisted off with the snow. There wasn't any for a long time and all of a sudden such a nice surprise. I will take them off piste

Re: Weather!

On our way home (quote from Fireball x-l-5 there ) last night, the gentle hill out of Aarwangen (Langenthal to motorway) was blocked by three cars sleewed sideways. They couldn't get up the hill! . Noticed that one Top of the rang Merc, still had the skinny 'go fast' tyres on. Tosspot!!!

Drive safely Effers, an' enjoy the snow

Re: Weather!

Lovely here this morning. About 10cm of lovely powdery white snow. Just enough to look lovely but not enough to be annoying. Just the way I like it.

( snow plough came past a 6.30 so I guessed we'd had a bit during the night)

Re: Weather!

Each to their own- you can't ski or snowboard on 10cm of snow though

And having a good powerful snowblower is very useful- hardly any shovelling at all- love it.

Since I have no intention of going either skiing or snowboarding it'll do for me.

Heavy snow + hairy collie = one giant self-propelled ice ball.

Ah, the special fun of winter.

Re: Weather!

First proper snow and kids got to make their first snow man. When I went to sleep it was still going strong and just sat there mesmerized by it! Everything was so bright, the sky was gorgeous. I know you are all laughing by now but really bedsides stuff as a kid I've only seen snow a few times and not much of it in London.

So this is my first proper snow too and it's gorgeous, just a little cold for me.

Re: Weather!

Now as you Brits know so well- there is the right kind of snow, and the wrong one And if that is the case for British Rail, it is certainly the case for making snowmen

It would be very difficult to make a snowman we've had last couple of days, very cold pure and dry powder that would not amalgamate sufficiently- but down near Lausanne, it should be perfect - enjoy you big kid x

Somehow the made one and you know you're right I am such a snow virgin I wouldn't know the difference. I like admiring it from inside right now

Just amazing how at night you can see nothing on 2 sides and then volia snow and it's like someone turned the lights on. The sky was just gorgeous, I'm a photographer so maybe I see wonder in some aspects others don't. Or I'm just strange

Re: Weather!

No you are not strange. One of the things I so love in winter in the Jura is the light- that very very special night you get with the sun, huge blue skies and that twinkly snow- it is so so special, truly and I am NO photographer (OH is).

This light has in fact influenced the Jura in very profound ways- and was the reason why watch and clock making developed here in the 1700s. Farmers couldn't farm, obviously, in winter due to snow- but their farm were built with at least one large window facing Sout- with the light reflected on snow giving them perfect condition for artisan watch-making. This is how our neighbour (well ex neighbour, that was in 1760s) began his apprenticeship here with his step dad. So interesting how geographical conditions do affect a lot more than we sometimes imagine.
