Can non-citzens volunteer for the army

Just what the title says, is it possible for non-citizens to join the Swiss military? The French have the foreign legion, the U.S. accept spretty much anyone who isn't a "threat to national security, and Israel lets in anyone who is Jewish. Just wondering if l'armée suisse does the same thing. (non-citizen friend, think it will help is language skills and job opportunities expand)

Well, the department that controls the army has an English web page:
http://www.vbs.admin.ch/internet/vbs/en/home.html

However, some bright spark has replaced the link to the army pages with one for Euro 2008...

As far I remember, you have to be a citizen (or have had a C-permit for a while) and have not served in another country's military.

It would surprise me if non-citizens can join the army. However the army is a civil employer, too.

Yeah, a better link, unless you'd rather read about Euro 2008 is http://www.vtg.admin.ch/

My understanding is that the army, in contrast to civil service, won't accept volunteers that don't hold Swiss citizenship. But you might want to check with them directly or refer to the relevant legislation for a more definitive answer - http://www.admin.ch/ch/d/sr/510_10/index.html
