Sweden ain't Switzerland

http://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/soz...-a-925287.html
Sorry, in German.

The Chinese (as many others) seem to have trouble keeping these two countries apart.

Now, can anyone help me obtain the awesome poster of the Swedish/Swiss campaign in China?

Re: Sweden ain't Switzerland

Somebody around who can translate those posters so we can use them in the USA too? Also there, the problem is the same: the names of the two countries are way too similar to be distinguished between.

Nice, except that I more often than nice was asked whether I was from SWAZILAND and often felt a bit irritated

Re: Sweden ain't Switzerland

A week ago I was hiking (in the States) and met a couple who had a son who somehow ended up as a mountain guide in Andermatt. We chatted about our trips to Switzerland, and they were confused ... I was talking about Arolla (VS) and they heard Airolo (TI). Understandable, as Airolo is on the other side of the mountain from Andermatt

Clearly not the same issue; it is certainly not a sign of geographic ignorance to confuse these two rather small villages.

The difference is even simpler: one makes fighter aircraft, and the other buys them.

There is a similar campaign in Austria designed for their american tourists which reminds them that there are no kangaroos in Austria!

Re: Sweden ain't Switzerland

Some years ago I subscribed an American icon of geekiness and I though it was immune to these things: "Analog Science Fiction and Fact". The magazine took 3 months to arrive. When it did, it had a sticker by the Swedish Post Office saying "Schweiz". I noticed the written address assumed there was some town in Sweden called Zurich.

After complaining to "Analog", the first email I received said that they made a typo, and it was now corrected.

Another 4 months without magazine, I received another one, this time stating that Zurich was in France. Again, France was this time overwritten with "Suisse".

Only at the 2nd time they got it right, but I've lost in 7 months of subscription 5 magazines. Fortunately they restarted the subscription again.

Re: Sweden ain't Switzerland

I was back in Canada a few weeks ago and had a dental appointment. As the lady was prepping she asked me where I was now living, I replied Switzerland.
To which she said, "Oh! I can't believe how beautiful the women are, they're so tall, with their blue eyes and blonde hair! You must speak Swedish really well!"

That's not too bad. Aeons ago, when I was travelling the United States I was asked if I liked to work for the Red Cross. It turned out that this person noticed the tiny Swiss Cross on my backpack and took it for a red cross.

Seems reasonable, what's wrong with this?? Except that Swedish girls are fluent at English.

As for the differencd between Sweden And Switzerland, the flag is a giveaway. The one with the cross on it, that's one if them.

- Suecia, Suiza ! (Sweden,Switzerland)

Re: Sweden ain't Switzerland

Here is a simple tip how to never forget which is which:
Eat surströmming in Sweden. (or anywhere else you can buy)

From that day, you'll know the difference

Somewhere in Texas, "so, where are you from?, you have a funny accent", "I'm from Spain", "ah, where in South America is that?"

Or as it happened to me in New York: "You are Portuguese? That's so cool, I've never been to Portuguese before..."

Re: Sweden ain't Switzerland

On my last trip home I visited with some former co-workers. One of them was all excited to talk to me about Switzerland...because he'd "taken a boat over there from Denmark when he visited his son" and thought it was really pretty!
