| | | Any Americans in Zurich - How is the fun and excitement here?
Most all original swiss people i have met have been extremely nice people.
I dont find much excitement or passion for things in people here?
I am from San Francisco and in general you could meet a new face and then could be very excited about something they are doing - big ideas, big thoughts, eyes lit up.
There are lots of rules here surely, does that have something to do with the passion?

They dream of a little house in the Swiss Alps away from all the silly foreigners.

Fun and excitement by the shovel-load. You just need to know where to look.
It's hard to be bored here if you are open, and willing to get out and meet people.

people are passionate they are just not so interested in trivial exchanges with strangers, and are probably not interested in their life story either.

Doesn't mean they aren't passionate about anything, though!

it is just cultural differences. Of course differences should not be generalized fully but trends can be analyzed.
Americans tend to think big and that big changes are good (this is especially so in metro areas of the US like Californa slightly less so in more reserved areas of the country).
Swiss tend to want things to continue as they are because things are good so why change.
Secondly, Americans more openly express their dreams, big, small and insignificant, to whoever cares to listen. Swiss are much more private.
Yes, I do agree with your assessment but I think it is a cultural things as our the rules. Rules are generally enforced by society here because it is viewed that the rules enacted are the best for the everyone. In other countries, rules are believed to be made by bureaucrats/politicians with no sense of the average person and thus breaking the rules is a sport.

What you will also find out is that younger people and those who have traveled quite a bit tend to be more "open" in an "American" sense. But you have to get out and find those people.

i find places that have a steady supply of SUNSHINE have a dramatic effect on people in a very positive way.
Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Greece, all fall into this category. I find Swiss people touch rigid and often difficult. Everyone has to play by the same rules here or there are stiff penalties, conformity comes to mind.
anyway just a grunt i had to moan about - dont read too deeply into your monitors out there
I am here for a girlfriend oddly enough - and trying to get into the ZURI lifestyle - but whew, its hard to adjust when you are from sunny california |

And I am from SF as well...on a two day posting binge here after not posting much for last year. Really disturbed by the ridiculous generalizations from people lately. I am genuinely embarassed for people who make these types of statements or judge me for the country I am from.
To byby, I will be happy to let you know where I am, so that I never have to meet you or anyone as narrow minded as you are.
PS - And so you know, I have loved living in every foreign country that I have been posted in. Always for different reasons, but I like to find the good in the places where i happen to be, and not give in to prejudices or generalizations that I may hear... | Quote: | | | | | Please tell me where they are, I'll make sure i am not at that place in that time,,, | | | | | | | The following 5 users would like to thank fduvall for this useful post: | |
