happy thanksgiving. who cares what you are. in the end it's just nice to have a day to celebrate the little that we all may have. i'm thankful for so many things, i try to remember it each day, some days it's easy other days i'm a bit stubborn. either way it's nice to have a day where you know everyone is engaged in a big lovefest that has food and family and friends at it's core.

we'll celebrate tomorrow. it seems swissies around here like to be part of a real american feast so i am happy to oblige and cook then eat then drink then eat again. no shame in a day of that
I've always wanted to try eating a roasted turkey like I see in the movies!

*wink wink*

Wha? Mean? How so?

I don't get it. What was mean about it?

I do. You all seem to be missing the point, that I, along with many/most other non-Americans, don't subscribe to this "thanksgiving" thing at all. I'm "thankful" that I'm not American, therefore, because it means I don't have to go around finding thinks to be thankful for. Geddit?

If you still think it's mean, I'm sorry, but it's certainly not intended.
I didnt say it was mean nor did i say you have to go around doing anything. I said i like it and i do. Anyway i'm thankful you're not american too;-)

And I'm thankful I'm not British so I know how to be funny without being mean.

it's actually driven more by this constant, nagging need to be direct and critical of others while contemporaneously being too frightened to own up to the emotional and other consequences of being direct and critical with others. after all, it was the Brits who first noticed that the truest words are said in jest. this is also one reason so many Brits complain that "the Swiss" are humorless - when "the Swiss" want to be funny they are absolutely and uproariously so, but when they want to be direct and critical they have no intention whatsoever of pretending to be funny just to soften the impact.

I hope every American everywhere enjoyed their Thanksgiving, and that every expat American the world over is today celebrating the fact that they do not live within travel distance of a Walmart or Best Buy.

The ones here have certainly got at least something to be thankful for: that they are ex-pats.

Re: Dear American Expats [Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!]

This is my fourth Thanksgiving outside of the United States and one thing I continue to be thankful for is local friends and folks like you all on EF, wishing us Americans abroad a happy Thanksgiving. I know it's corny but it really warms my heart when people who have absolutely no ties to my country or its traditions go out of their way to share the holiday spirit with me. So Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Americans everywhere, and to the kind people who wish us well!

Depending on your point of view, there will either be a common lineage going back to Noah, or an acknowledgement that our ancient ancestors were swinging about in the same trees.
For those who subscribe to the latter theory, it will be clear that in the case of the . . . . .

Re: Dear American Expats [Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!]

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who does that sort of thing! I never realized how much these silly traditions mean when you are far from home. So much to be grateful for. I hope everyone enjoys the holiday.
