Beard Grooming

Beard Grooming and Wet Shaves:

I thinking the nearest place to Zug would be Zurich??

Any suggestions??

Back in London I would just pop down to my local Jamaican barber for a tenner.

cheers

Re: Beard Grooming

As a very profound beard-lover and beard-wearer myself, I like to take good care of my bearded glory... but prefer to get an occasional "every-now-and-then" visit to the local Barbers to sort it out professionally as well.

Now barbers are not as popular here as I remember them from my 7 years in the UK, but they do offer quite a rare and lovely service at the "West Herren Coiffeur" located on the Sihlfeldstrasse 54 in Zurich.

They do a male haircut for CHF25 including a dry "sort out" of your beard. If you look for a wet shave or a proper oil shave, this costs extra, but I'm usually happy with what they include for free to go with the CHF25 haircut.

Most barbers in there are foreign and some have a hard time with their German or English, so make sure you tell them very exactly and detailed how you want it, if you don't want to leave the shop the way *THEY* think you'd look good

Re: Beard Grooming

Ps. It's also one of those Barbers, where the customers and employed people won't look funny at you if you're "just here to get my beard sorted out" without getting your hair cut if you know what I mean...

I've seen plenty of customers who just came for their beard and left without getting their hair done.

To be honest, I got about 2mins through it (av. shaving time) and just scanned through the rest of the clip....... to see that he looked almost the same at the end as he did at the start.

If he transformed into someone cool like "Uncle Phil" fromn the Fresh Prince of Bell Air I'd understand...... but he didn't.

Re: Beard Grooming

Judging by the difficulty I am having in getting any beard care products here, I can well understand going to the barber to have it sorted out. Does nowhere sell beard oil and similar products?

tl;dr: Even if you tell exactly what you want at Herren West you will leave the shop the way *THEY* think you'd look good. The owner ruined my beard.

I realise this is an old thread. But I hope to save anyone else from this barber. I have been going to West Herren Coiffeur (now moved to Bertastrasse) for several months. I always go to the Salon owner. My first experience was good. But it's gone downhill from there. And the owner has become more and more belligerent with me. He seems to resent me asking questions.

However when I was searching for a replacement I came across this review from Swisscub. I realised the issue might be that I'm not detailed enough in what I'm asking. I did some research on the internet and decided exactly what I should be asking for. And I decided to give Herren Coiffure one more try.

Yesterday, I sat in the chair and started telling the owner/barber exactly what I wanted. (Cut straight across the bottom at the chin—no point which the guy calls spitzbart or teufelsbart, only .5 mm off but a little closer on the sides, straight down not "contoured" to the jawbone, and only to "this" point on my cheek which I showed him). The guy got extremely impatient. Started talking to another customer while I was telling him what I wanted. Not listening to what I was asking for. Then he ordered me to sit back in the chair and stop talking. He said, "I know what you want, even though you don't know what you want." I repeated to him what I wanted, this time he became preoccupied with his phone, and he was clearly angry I wasn't letting him cut my beard the way HE wanted.

I should have left the chair then, but in my previous experience he is at least careful and thoughtful when he cuts, although the result isn't always exactly to my liking, it's always been passable.

However, this time when he started cutting he was very rushed and careless. Clearly angry with me for daring to ask for what I wanted. When he was finished he asked me to look at it.

It way awful. And pointed.

Before I said a word he said "You must think I ruined your beard. Hahaha."

I answered, "It's not what I asked for."

He replied, "It's a pointed beard, and that's what I think looks good. So that's what I cut."

Even if I had asked for a pointed beard (which I've "pointedly" told him on every visit I do not want) his work was shoddy. The cut is uneven, and not blended and looks pretty terrible.

His body language indicated he was just challenging to say something back to him.

I'm saying it here on the English forum: this guy ruined my beard. Don't go to Herren West Coiffure.

The guy is in turns aggressive and passive aggressive, and if he doesn't like you for whatever reason you will leave the shop with something much different than you wanted.

I realise people have different experiences. And my experience with this barber has gotten progressively worse over time. And I would avoid him at all costs.

Re: Beard Grooming

I found this place www.the barber.ch

They have a lot of different options for the man of bearded nature. Yes it's not cheap, blah blah, but if you have a beard there is no price on a great barber experience.

Will up date after Tuesday.
