Cheers, I did already - I emailed yesterday and I'm doing five minutes this Friday. Excited and terrified in equal measure.
Cool, good luck!

I hope it goes really well! I think you're quite brave...

Personally, I think I'd rather have my nipples waxed than stand on a stage and try to get a group of Swissies to laugh.

The nipple waxing is the encore. I'm kind of hoping there will be lots of English in the audience, it once took me half an hour to explain to a Swiss the joke 'How do you make a swiss roll?'

Cheers for the message - yes it went pretty well. Very nice audience and I got a few good laughs. Definitely need to do it again.

Re: Stand-up Comedy, Open-Mic in Zürich

Hi Guys

Great thread, got me really interested.
i've been playing with the idea of doind stand up for a few years now, haven't actually tried it and honestly don't know if 1) i'm actually funny and 2) if i can tell jokes in front of a crowd.
An open Mic would be a great opportunity, shame that there isn't one hereabouts. And the International Comedy Club gig sounds daunting especially for someone like me.
Happy to hear that it went well for you. You mentioned that all you did was write to them and you got a time slot afterwards; was it actually that straightforward? no auditioning?. Maybe you might have some tips for a newcomer like me...
I do have another question; are all the stand ups in english or in german as well?
Thanks

Re: Stand-up Comedy, Open-Mic in Zürich

Hi bature,
I reckon if you want to do it you have to just go for it - there must be a reason why you're interested in having a go - there's no getting away from the fact that the anticipation is terrifying but once you get up there you'll be fine. It was a really nice, supportive crowd at the International Comedy Club and a far cry from some of the lairy venues in the UK where newbies get heckled and yelled at from the start.

I don't think I'm qualified to give any tips as I've only ever done stand up twice - just run your material past some mates whose opinion you trust/respect first and try to enjoy yourself.

There was no audition, I emailed the club on Tuesday and was on that Friday.

Cheers,
jr78

I'll be doing interim 5 minutes at the International Comedy Club show at Geneva Uptown on the 22nd of April for those who want to come see me fail.

Hey, how did your 5 minutes go? I used to do stand up in Paris and I really miss it. I'd be interested to get in touch with you and set up something.

I'm also connecting with the new guys doing improv, The Improv Comedy Kitchen. They're really good. PM me !

It seemed to go well. The other comics were surprised it was my first time. I know my writing is decent and I have confidence in that, but my delivery is obviously lackluster. You need years to truly develop that. I did it in English, no French allowed I believe. I mean, you can try, but the audience is mostly expats who speak little to no French.

I'll probably be doing it again later this month, but he told me it's a good idea to change venue, so I'll probably hit Lausanne next.

The best way to ask is to e-mail them directly, check for contact details at http://www.internationalcomedyclub.ch/

Re: Stand-up Comedy, Open-Mic in Zürich

Right - I'm trying to revive this thread. There seemed to be a few people around Zurich interested in performing. I think everything has kind of died down for the summer - but if people are still up for it, I'd love to get together to see if starting an open mic night is feasible (not just in English, we could get locals to have a go as well, might help me improve my Schwiezer-Deustch and would definitely broaden the potential audience-base). Who is in?

Hey, I guess I am reviving a dead thread but still...

jr78, are you still up for setting up an amateur stand-up club? I'd love to be involved in that. I have been shuffling with the idea for some time in my head, I guess it's time I did something about it.

Re: Stand-up Comedy, Open-Mic in Zürich

It's always nice when a thread comes back to life. Yes, I would be interested in getting some sort of comedy night going - I've not done any stand-up for a while, I'm hoping to do 5 minutes in Zurich in November. Any other way to get on stage and try and make strangers laugh would be great. Have you done much comedy in the past?

Re: Stand-up Comedy, Open-Mic in Zürich

That's great. I haven't done any stand up before but I do have some experience with theatre and my friends tell me I'm funny so I thought why not.

I just moved to Zürich so I don't have much idea about how to go about it but I would love to help. The International Comedy Club sounds a bit too professional to me so I'm not too keen on going there for my first time.
