The baffling thing really is that iodine tablets have an expiry date, since potassium iodide is a stable compound and should be well encapsulated.
The active ingredient (potassium iodide) might be long term stable, but the inactive ingredients may well be less stable over time. Hence the need for replacement.

Your argument is like saying, for example, we shouldn't get scientists to look into meteorite warning systems because if a really big one came along, we'd all die anyway.
Not really, looking out for meteorites is our only form of defence. With nuclear power I'd much rather put my faith in the numerous fail-safes, redundancies and exceptionally high standards demanded of Swiss engineering projects rather than a packet of pills gathering dust at the back of my medicine cabinet.

Re: Have you taken your Iodine tablets?

I thought that it was a propaganda/information/public awareness exercise by the Green Party.

Seems like it isn't, but kind of works in their favor anyway.

I'll be practising our weekly avoidance session (Duck and Cover with Bert the Turtle) this weekend:

Re: Have you taken your Iodine tablets?

Different reactor type so cannot be compared Lucens was a heavy water reactor, known for producing plutonium.

Side thought why would the Swiss want Plutonium?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leibsta...ar_Power_Plant

Is a light water reactor.

Not all reactors are the same design, or generation hence some inherently safer than others.

Unless you smash them with a 9 richer scale earthquake and a 10 m tsunami then nothings safe.

1Km down the road and we wouldn't be getting them either. But we are.

Perhaps LozU-238 would be so kind as to send you his ones as he doesn't need them?

Re: Have you taken your Iodine tablets?

Received the leaflet announcing the upcoming pills today in the mailbox. However, since I am not registered with the local authorities, not sure I will actually get the pills (guess foreign diplomats are bound to be sacrificied in case of nuclear incident...).

The leaflet did indeed specify that the blast radius... er, distribution radius was increased on this occasion, from 20 to 50 km (www.jodtabletten.ch/download.php?id=21_0aa0b689)

He would be the world first documented case of a true iodine allergy:

The same reason anyone wanted it. Also the reason they bought the Mirage.

After that happened, one would think they had more reasoning skill and came to the conclusion that a reactor inside a mountain is actually a pretty neat a safe idea.

Iodine is an essential part of our diet. We need it to ensure proper thyroid function...
