Re: London vs Zurich

@Phos - no where is perfect but as a woman with a Western man, the odds of me being mistreated or the victim of domestic violence are much lower and of course living in a country where it is accepted for women to go out and earn a living greatly improves the quality of my life - that's what's going through the minds of many women from developing countries when they hook up with a western man.

Of course developed Asian women (Singapore and Hong Kong) - they're brainwashed by Hollywood movies and many view western men as a status symbol much in the same way that brands like Gucci, Prada etc are so popular out here. Western men become yet another consumer good (and I'm told Asian women enjoy the bigger packages down there - crude but that's what I hear)!!

Yup - I do indeed know Asia well and I'm ready to go back to Europe!!

The biggest challenge is how you, in whatever circumstance you are in, handle the obstacles in front of you.

If you are complaining where you are right now, I guarantee you that after a couple of years in Switzerland, you will be complaining about how the Swiss are beating you down.
I absolutely agree with you Phos!!

Understood, and there is truth to what you are saying. In just about all Asian cultures, marriage is a societal function as a union between two families. People get married, sometimes arranged before they know it, to comply with society. They do this willingly and gladly. Afterall, it is for the good of their culture and society. But if you are no way vested in that culture and society, it would be non-sense for you.

Keep in mind though that not everybody there is like that in this day and age. Frankly, there are plenty of people, especially in Asia, who feel burdened by their own culture. They aren't stupid.

Finally about your experience with your ex Indian Bfs. Isn't it also likely they found you a self-centered person who wasn't prepared to go the extra yard to make it up with their respective families? I mean, to you, may be, they were bfs who you were ready to dump if you found something not to your liking, but for them you were THE ONE person they were ready to place in their life ALONG WITH their family. Think how painful it would have been for them when they found that, even with all the short comings of their family, their efforts to make the East meet West failed big time because you, perhaps, made no or little efforts in that direction.

All value systems are different from one another and elements like personal happiness, sex, family ties, wealth etc have different weights in different value systems.

Here we go again - more western women bashing!! You're right I'm so self-centred that I gave up my career and moved all the way across the globe to be with the man I loved - how very selfish of me!! And then I was so selfish I even looked (and struggled due to xenophobia) to find a job here so I could be next to the man I loved. I spent all of my free time reading about travelling to and learning Tamil. Yeah, I really am a dumbass western girl!!

So to clarify - you are 34 and not in a relationship.

So which is it? Fat, ugly or both?

I missed the post about your Indian BF. But you realize the same thing can happen in Europe? You could find a guy you fall for, but turns out to be a total Momma's boy, whose Mom may not take a liking to you taking him away. And there are for a fact many European Momma's boys. In such a case, could you really blame all European culture? I don't think you should get embittered about a whole culture though. I hope you weren't in love, and was heart-broken.

I won't call it western women bashing. I just ventured upon some possibilities. Now replace youself by that Asian woman. She also travels half the globe, perhaps gives up a good job, severes ties with the only family and the only culture she knows, may be even starts reading about, lets say, French culture and cuisine all that to be with the man she is in love. Why your 'love' be called love while their's be termed 'hooking up' Western men?
Not that some Western women aren't self-centered. Many are. Not that some Asian women aren't looking to escape from their society. Some definitely are.

ps: Tamil is difficult, I agree.

Erm, thanks. You got issues and I do not think a move to Zurich will fix them.

I hate to break it to you but this is exactly what most of the women who have a partner from a different country and move there to be with him experience.
Hard to believe that western women are not that special, but here you are.

Edit: I don't understand why do you try so hard to put down the Asian chicks. My experience is very limited, but those who I encountered were extremely pleasant persons and mind you, I'm a woman so they shouldn't have made any effort, right? My Korean friend is one of the most gentle, kind and open-minded persons I have ever knew. I find myself thinking like her in so many situations.
Really, you sound like you know the culture from exterior, from a very cold and detached observance, you keep reminding about statistics and studies. People are more than that.

Move back to Zürich or wherever you want and you'll see how tolerant "Western" people are, how they always accept and embrace other cultures....rose tinned glasses it's time to get rid of, otherwise you'll be as disappointed here as elsewhere.

Seriously?! I know I said I'd stay out of this debate but it's getting to be such a farce and increasingly offensive to Singaporeans that I can't resist having my say.

Most of my friends ( Western and Asian) are having quite a laugh reading this thread. Quite a few , especially the Europeans ones, are actually gobsmacked!

You seem to be part of an unlucky minority as most of my western female friends living in Singapore also never had problems meeting and dating western men while living there. In fact, most have married western partners they have met in Singapore or other regions in Asia. It also seems like you have a serious chip on your shoulder due to some unfortunate incidents with a small minority of Asians. I hope you'll see some day that all the negative traits you've say Asians have exist in some form in ALL cultures, races, and continents. So please don't tar us all with the same brush, thanks.

I have to agree with Furiousrose. For a person who has been in Asia for only 5 years, you seem to know more about Asian culture than the people who actually have lived and grown up there. Five years is still a pretty short time. I have been in Switzerland only six years but will never claim I know Switzerland or its culture more than the Swiss themselves.

Please do not go on about western woman bashing. Whether you realize it or not, you've spent a lot of time here bashing us Asians ( especially Sinagporean women) and dumbing us down - It isn't appreciated. Also, that dig at Treverus' wife is absolutely uncalled for.

I think if you want to leave Asia, please feel free to. You will not be missed. But with that attitude of yours, you'll really find that most pleasant and open-minded Europeans won't take kindly to your views, however entitled you are to them.

To quote Phos' previous comment, Zurich is indeed the place for you and I agree that there is a fab political party here that you would make the perfect spokeswoman for.

LOL.

I'm not the most patriotic Singaporean around to be honest. I could go on and on about how many things are wrong with the way the country is being run. But I disagree Singaporeans being stereotyped and generalized because of a small minority or Asians classified as uncultured, uncouth, emotionless people who are worse than another race. It would be like me saying Brits are all loudmouthed drunk chavs on benefits and that isn't the case

Re: London vs Zurich

This is the first time I've posted on this forum...is it usually this contentious?

As an Asian-American woman married to a Swiss man, I must say, the recent series of posts have been pretty weird.

I mean, yeah...I totally wanted my man because he wasn't going to hit me and all of my other diminutive, shy but somehow really domineering Asian exes pummeled me repeatedly??

Anyway, I've dated both Asians and white guys but I've always found that white guys were more assertive than Asian men so I've dated more of them. It's not always the Asian ladies clamoring for the Caucasian guys you know... ;-)

Thats about the level of this debate.
