FTFY

Don't get me wrong, fun place to visit for a week or 2 on business - maybe even a month - but longer??? Sod that.

@ all - I think we need to do a swap. You guys come live in Asia for five years and I'll go back to Europe.

Nah. Asia's rubbish since we gave it back to the locals.

Big Fat Chance. Highly unlikely.

Anyway guys; I think some of the previous posters were right. The main factor is going to be my career rather than dating. I feel it was a mistake to come out here for someone and I don't think I will ever do that again and definitely not for a non-westerner. After all, I spend more than eight hours a day in a cubicle.

Sounds very familiar. Any Expat forums there with a Complaints Corner?

If you decide to come to Switzerland, please let us know. We should definitely organise a welcome event for you. It would be awesome.

I will say this too; I get where you're coming from because I used to be like you and would throw the word racist in whenever difference was brought up. But honestly now that I understand the Asian perspective of the world, it frightens me to see how brain washed the west is. I totally get it now when Asians tell me that westerners are naive and sometimes plain stupid.

I think it makes sense to take a balanced approach. No need to go full bridget jones yet.

Find somewhere good for your career, but leave enough time to socialise and meet people.

The last thing you want is to be left with regret having wasted years of your life working for a company that doesn't give a shlt about you and being made redundant in your mid-40s.

Not so stupid that we couldn't occupy and plunder the shit out of them for most of the last 500 years.

Re: London vs Zurich

500 years is unaccurate. In any case, it's been approximately fifty years since the west withdrew from its colonies. And as I've already pointed out on this forum many parts of the world are in a much much better financial state than the west. It's far more relevant and necessary to look at Chinese economic and neo-colonial interests around the world. Wake up everyone - we're living in a brand new rapidly changing world! All this colonialism talk is more than expired.

I already posted a link earlier on to the Zambian economist Dambisa Moyo's book on ownership of global resources.

The Yellow Peril!

I'm going to learn Chinese. I'll need it to buy cheese from Herr Lutschinger before the decade is done!

They're inscrutable, you know, these orientals. Put a different value on life. Cruel people. My Great Uncle Ernie never had no truck with them after what they did to his mate Herbert.

I'm not trying anything. There is more than one perspective on the world and westerners just don't get this. I can post links to books by Asian intellectuals on this point. Just because you're ethnically Asian does not mean that you are the gatekeeper to whether or not there is an Asian perspective of the world that differs radically to the western perspective.

You can dress an octopus in a suit but it doesn't mean it'll make electronic components at very good cheap price.

With the same logic, just because you have been living in Asia (5 years in Singapore, and where else?) doesn't mean that you can understand what Asian perspective is. This is an overstatement.
Heck, I'm not even sure whether there is such thing as an Asian perspective. Again, it's a huge continent, you know. Even if there is any, it's certainly not the one you mentioned, that the West is naive and such. At least, me and all Asian people whom I know in my lifetime never think like that. No, I'm not trying to be a gatekeeper. It's just because I'm an Asian, and I have a perspective.

Then how come you got it? Are you not a Westerner? You are right that there are many perspectives and many are getting to know some of these whether Westerner or Latin American, African or Asian. It is also true that the Asian economies will get more assertive with time and indeed they should be given their population. It is but natural in a competitive world that the players who would negotiate the tide better will swim better or at least stay longer in the game.
