And yet a lot more of my friends keep saying they want to quit but don't really manage to... I guess they don't try hard enough? It's just that for some people it's harder or near damn impossible to quit when the biology disagrees. Have you actually managed to give it up before and thus know that you can actually do it?
The two people who were the heaviest smokers I knew (one here and one in the U.K.) and who had been smoking for over forty years, both gave up without too much difficulty - and with no relapse.

They both had similar experiences in that firstly, both were told by their doctors that they would die soon unless they gave up and secondly, they both used Zyban to help them give up.

They were the two people that I was absolutely sure would never be able to give up and would carry on smoking until their graves.

You really are getting jittery.

So, are you going to give up the habit or not?
So, you're a closet smokerbater. I also gave up many, many years ago, and I know that just about the least helpful thing you can do is to nag smokers to give up.

The beauty of e-cigs is that you feel that you're doing something positive, taking a step forwards and moving on to something new. Psychologically, just giving up smoking seems a negative thing - a backward step.

Tom, you mistake being "jittery", for simply wondering why you are in a thread being needlessly negative to, and baiting, smokers who want to quit. Seems like you have some issues of your own to sort out if you think it is in any way a normal thing to do. It's just pretty sad behaviour, whether you realise it or not.

I now don't smoke tobacco cigarettes (after many years of doing so), I smoke an e-cigarette, and am happy sticking with that as I now smoke it less and less and it has made a clear difference to my previous habits, not to mention my lung capacity, taste and smell).

I think my last post was pretty helpful advice to those who want to give up both smoking and nicotine addition.

Where are your useful posts on this thread?

Okay, I see it like this.
  1. Whilst e-cigarettes (containing nicotine) may be a helpful way to stop people smoking, they are an unproven way to help people give up nicotine addiction.
  2. Although there would appear to not be any harmful effects of e-cigarette use, there have been no real controlled and regulated studies carried out.
  3. I feel we may be opening a can of worms with normalising their use - what narcotics could be introduced in the future that could be be administered with an inhalation method?
  4. Once that lid is off, it's going to be difficult to put it back on again.

I don't think they should be on sale. If people really want to give up smoking, there are plenty of methods that are safe and work with little will-power*

*Of course you'll need the tiniest amount of will power in even the easiest method and I appreciate that some people mistake lack of will-power for enjoyment.
(The enjoyment is in the relieving of the cravings - rather like an alcoholic relieving the withdrawal symptoms from alcohol deprivation with that morning vodka as opposed to winding-down on a Friday night with a couple of beers or even enjoying a cigar now and again).

I hope that is not too twitty for you, Richdog?

Congratulations for finally giving up smoking, Patsycat!

In a week you'll feel so much better and wonder what all the fuss was about.
