Zurich vs Bern ?

Which city is nicer to live?
I like a beautiful and clean river or a lake surrounded with a snow mountain, need a good shopping center, an excellent transfortation with which I can travel to the near European cities and would like to enjoy boating or leisure easily. A night life is not important to me. Job places is important.
In ptictures, Bern looks prettier and cleaner than Zurich.
Please compare the two cities....

Re: Zurich vs Bern ?

Bern doesn't have much of an airport, and only 12 platforms on the railway station, Zurich has many more rail connections. It also has more job opportunities, so try Zurich first. Both cities are clean.

Re: Zurich vs Bern ?

In 1967, still in England, I had a choice of two jobs - one in Bern and the other in Zurich. I chose Zurich and I love Zurich and have always been very happy - but looking back today Bern would have been maybe the better choice. It's near to the real mountains for hiking and skiing, has two lovely relatively unspoilt lakes not far away, shares two languages, is nearer to the Tessin and the Med., and has the government house. It's more or less in the middle of everything as far as transport and roads go and the airport question raises its head only once or twice a year for most people. And I like the Bern dialect. Next time perhaps.

Zürich has Zürisee, Katzensee, Greifensee, Pfäffikersee on its doorstep , is
close to the mountains, has direct trains to Lugano (- onward to Milano) and Locarno, and direct trains to München and Paris, has an S-Bahn system linking up in to Baden-Württemberg, to Schaffhausen, Aargau, Zug and into the Canton of St Gallen (Rapperswil) and has a fairly well served airport

Re: Zurich vs Bern ?

Zurich, despite being populated by grey zombies and trust fund anarchists, has the benefit of being located over a "thin" portal whereby one may enter the Twilight Lands and frolic with the subjects of Queen Mab.

Bern, on the other hand, has robot dinosaurs.

It's all about individual preferences, really.

Re: Zurich vs Bern ?

We lived just outside of Bern, in Belp for four years, and now we live in Winterthur. I liked both very much. Belp, or anywhere south towards Thun is gorgeous. We had an amazing view from our bedroom. The city is lovely, small and easily navigated. If you travel a lot, going to a major airport is a pain from Bern, if you have an early flight.

We live in Winterthur, easy commute to Zurich. The view isn't as fabulous but transportation is better, shopping is easier and i like the feel of the city. I like Winterthur, as a smaller city with nice green spaces. One of the issues with Belp was that it was a bit more complicated to get into Bern and beyond than it is to get to zuerich from winti.

I really need to be in a city of sorts, just not a big one. I like the area around Zurich better, but i might be biased because my husband is happier here than he was in Bern.

Re: Zurich vs Bern ?

It's a personal choice based on what you're looking for. Zurich has more to offer and has good connections. The airport is a big plus not just for yourselves but for visitors.

I would choose Zurich and only move to Bern if I needed to be there for work.

Re: Zurich vs Bern ?

My husband did the commute Belp - oerlikon for about 4 months. 3 trains, almost 2 hours each way. He was exhausted....might work for others, but not for him.

Re: Zurich vs Bern ?

If it's a choice between living actually in one of the two cities, choose Zürich.
If it's a choice between Bern & Winterthur, choose Winterthur.
Come to think of it, if it's a choice between Detroit & Winterthur, still don't choose Winterthur.

So you'd live in Winterthur rather than Bern but choose Detroit over Winterthur? Ok.

As you're hopefully coming here to study you won't get much choice. As Zurich will issue your student permit - should you be accepted at the school - you have to live in Zurich canton. You could ask if you can live in another canton, but if they say no then Zurich is where you'll stay.

And job place is only important in that you can only work 15 hours a week and without German will struggle to find a job.

Looking at your previous posts regarding translation of the application documents I think your question is fairly academic anyway. Looking at the school's Media course it requires a good knowledge of German and English where applicable. That's something you don't have and are unlikely to in the near future.

Ah, i didn't realise you were coming to study. In that case, you ought to live as close to your studies as is manageable.

So does Riyadh and I wouldn't live there, either.

no. I have never been interested in techno music or in a club. An opera house is my favorite.
