About EUR 2 in Germany. We live so close to the German border that I rarely indulge in coffee out in Switzerland.

YEs, 3.70 for a cup of coffee is expensive.

But on the scale of luxury indulgences, 3.70 to sit in a nice café, open a good book, and while away a bit of time watching the world go by - that's still pretty good value.
For the same reason not even SB seems expensive to me. Plus their Cappuccino is served in huge cups so you can read a lot while sipping it...this is what I call money well spent. Little indulgences here and there. Otherwise, I'm sure we don't spend more than 70 chf per month on the coffee we drink at home. Maybe not even that much.

Yes, but German coffee is even worse than Swiss-German coffee!

The beer is OK, however.

Re: How much does your coffee habit cost you?

Last week I took Lil Dude to McDonalds and I got a Cafe Crema (small) in the McCafe section. I believe it was about 3.60 CHF. It was decent. Not the best and not the worst.
I brought my good ole Mr. Coffee with me when we moved and run it off a transformer. I also brought a few packages of ground coffee and coffee beans ( Dunkin Donuts, Eight O'Clock Coffee, New England Coffee Donut Shop Blend). I drink way too much of the stuff to use the pods. When friends come to visit they know to bring a package or two.
Plus I hate to think about adding stuff to the trash (pods) when I can dump my coffee grounds in the yard/help my plants. Coffee is definitely my addiction...

Jeeze and hardly the nicest surroundings either

I pay (at work) 1.- for coffee, 1.10 for renverse or 1.20 for nespresso capsules.

Pop over and I'll bring one out for 2.- a pop.
1.20 for a capsule!!!! You are being ripped off !

One of the surprising good values here is coffee beans from small, local coffee roasters. I get wonderful quality fresh-roasted beans at no more - and often a bit less - than what I would pay in the grocery store. And certainly significantly less than the pods.

Delivered to my door, no less.

Keep an eye out for a local roaster - you might find a bargain. Or at least an affordable luxury.

Real coffee can only be had in Italy, EUR 0.90

Tom

But even Halbtax means Zch-Chiasso & returno CHF 100.--, divided by 10 coffees still CHF 10.-- which is very expensive

A cup of coffee has always been expensive in Switzerland. It used to be considered a luxury item one treated oneself. For many, it still is.

By the way, there are no Starbucks shops in Italy.

Which is amazing as the business idea of Starbucks was born in Milano

No idea how that coffee tasted, but for 2.70sfr you can get a cafe creme at McD's including a mini chocolate. I am not saying McD's coffee sets any standards for the brown liquid, but it certainly serves the purpose on occasion and allows access to toilet (potential 2-5sfr saving at a train station).

I read recently that projected price increases for 2015 included those for bread, OLMA wurst, electricity and...coffee. Bean supplies have been stretched due to demand but also actual harvests due to weather conditions.

Have no interest in resurrecting the *$ debate, but for anyone who uses fresh beans - whole or ground - most shops are offering the Christmas blend (regular and espresso) at half price so 4.25sfr instead of 9.50. I loaded a card with 40sfr in 2012, and was quite happy to use that yesterday to purchase 6 bags for the freezer having stocked up while in Germany last week (ie I never go to Starbucks for a drink they make, but it keeps me happy at home).

99% of purveyors of Kaffi® serve up burned swamp water. You do however get a complimentary dose of UHT "Cream" in case it's not rancid enough, I'll give them that.

There are places who know how to make coffee and are aware that fresh milk is available (why UHT, why?) but you have to know where to go and they are scarce as chickens' lips.

I shall unashamedly make a sweeping generalisation that coffee in Switzerland is crap, which surprises me as it is essentially a luxury item. Luxury items should be treated with the requisite care.

We live in a one-shot, single-use, standardized and good for the masses Nespresso, Illy, Amici, UHT rat milk world. I accept that and take care to drink my coffee at home.

I do however know most excellent sources of supremely well roasted coffee beans available in Switzerland though so I'll give them 10/10 for that.

Calm down, it is only coffee, which makes it a first world problem.

I happily drink the Nespresso coffee here at work and don't lose any sleep over it.

Coffee is subject to personal taste. A coffee I love is horror to the next person, and what others like is horror to me.

Astonishing is that coffee in France, a country with a big CAFE culture, tends to be worse. Coffee in Germany and in England however tends to be even worse. For good coffee in cafés you have to go to Italy

The Britannia is well known for it's "not expensive" drinks. I paid 4 francs for a coffee in Eaux Vives last week.

Also, usually, in the centre of town a glass of wine is 4-5 francs sometimes six. In the Britannia it is between 3-3.50.

It's an ok pub to go to during the day, the Terrace is right on the street for people watching, the staff are nice and you can read the papers in peace.

And it's central - right next door to Manor and the train station. Oh, and you can observe the "druggie drunks" across the road in safety!!

2.80 CHF at my Patisserie in Geneva (I believe Geneva has the cheapest coffee in Switzerland).
I still find Switzerland has decent coffee compared with most places in the world. Italy clearly wins and in last place probably the USA, which must have the vilest product (I usually describe it as boiled cow-piss).

I don't know what you are all complaining about.

The coffee in the mountains around Wengen is CHF4+, and it's usually too cold.

Now that's expensive!
