I lived in Italy for ten years and a coffee at my local bar cost one euro and that included a croissant! I go back regularly and the prices haven't changed. There'd be a riot if they did!

Maybe a quick trip across the border for a cheap cup of the best coffee in the world is warranted?

Things in Italy differ from place to place. And to get to Italy is NOT a quick trip across the border, not at all. It is more than two hours on the train.

There are actually some "roasters" in Zürich, e.g. Schwarzenbach in Niederdorf, Café Noir at Neugasse, radicalbeans or Stoll. There should be some more...

To my knowledge "pour over" coffee is rarely done here.
Thanks for the tip! Will definitely try them out!

I have a very small sample of people, but both my Swiss partner and I are into pour over method. Puts my personal estimate around 50% of households I have spent extended time in I would suspect fewer do it though because the pour over coffee tends to be a bit weaker than Moka/Nespresso. But also a portion of the price!

Re: How much does your coffee habit cost you?

I like my coffee "thick" - not with grinds, but lots of intense flavour with each sip - so I use more than the standard amount ground for a manual espresso machine (setting 4 on a Ditting grinder)

Right you are. Amazing is the differences. While coffee in the State of Louisiana is superb in many places, it in most places in Texas is horrible
Now that is a generalisation!

As you know - believe we both have some relatives/ancestors there - its an enormous state. If you mean "most places" as in the petrol court stations that line the road from Houston to Austin, Dallas to Amarillo, or south to Brownsville, etc you may be right, but I have found some good coffee holes in eg Houston Museum/Rice U area and Fredricksburg to name just 2 examples of areas I have reason to visit.

Well, real examples out of real life. Had an uncle, born in Schaffhausen in 1900 but grown up in Texas, who however lived for quite a while in Louisiana (oil industry),. He out of the Louisiana experience convinced his first (victim to a brain Tumor in 1965) and his second wife about good coffee. A cousin in Houston and his brother in Austin and their wifes made coffee which looked and tasted like aquarell colours. and while in New Orleans, coffees in cafes tended to be delicious, coffees in Houston, Dallas, Longview and Marshall by average were of meagre Quality. I from that uncle, who had lost his command of German almost completely after a stroke, learnt a lot in regard to practical life. He was not well educated and got forward, got back, got out, got in, got up, got down, etc. But had a very rich life experience, and I on visits three times exchanged a lot .with the old chap, He had worked in the oil industry and smoked like a chimney but in spite of all became 88 years old

I think CHF 3.00-4.00 is the average.

Re: How much does your coffee habit cost you?

That's pretty much standard for Zurich.

If you want something less expensive look for the Kiosks or Coop Pronto stores where takeaway coffee is around three Francs.

Re: How much does your coffee habit cost you?

what I find astonishing is how much Starbucks costs here compared to any other place on earth. 7.40CHF for a medium latte with cream! this must be bordering on insanity.
