Another 'Three Kings Day' Tradition

In addition to the tasty Dreikönigstagkuchen (and no matter which side you take in the figurine controversy, y'all must admit - the bread is indeed tasty), there's another 6. January tradition I love:

Einschellen

In our little village the Trychlerverein wanders up and down the streets on the night of 6. January, ringing their yoked cowbells, their leader at the head of the parade cracking a whip. A joyful noise if ever there was one.

I've heard different explanations for the tradition, at least as it stands in our village - some say the noise is to banish the evil spirits, some say it's to launch the Fastchnachtzeit. Either way, it's quite fun to watch.

Respect to the gentlemen of the Trychlerverein who just passed by the house - those bells are mighty heavy and it's mighty cold tonight.

Anybody else have an Einschellen tradition in your town or village?

Re: Another 'Three Kings Day' Tradition

Five o' clock in the morning on December 31st.

I was busy trying to get little Mathnuetli back to sleep, having been awake the whole night myself with a dodgy stomach, and I thought I was hallucinating.

This country is mad, but I love it!
