Bern, waste, trash, rubbish collection changed

Every household was given a flyer last year explaining the changes, but maybe you arrived late, or threw it away.

Bern is re-introducing a new vegetable refuse collection and the routes and times of the collection have been changed in some roads. To be safe, you must put your blue bag out on the pavement before 7 am. Bags placed out the night before will be tolerated if less than 12 hours ahead of collection time.

The 2015 waste collection plan is available online at link below, in many languages, if you have any doubts, please ask, as there are fines if you do not keep to the rules!

At the end of the document is a list of the streets and their zone numbers. Use the numbers to check the collection dates for the various waste in your street: household, card & paper, vegetable.

No, we don't do skips, nor containers. It's burgers for burghers next month.

gruengutsammlung - organic collection in Bern

As explained in http://www.bern.ch/leben_in_bern/woh...uengutsammlung , from this year the organic waste will be collected in Bern. Unfortunately, my German is not enough for understanding how the thing works.
Has any of you ordered a container? Should this be done on a family basis or on a building basis (I should ask neighbour/agency?)
Is it correct that the yearly price of fixed once you choose the size of the container? But then they come to empty it every week?

Sorry, I don't get it ... Is it the wrong term? (I'm not a native speaker also of English).Or in another parts of Switzerland they don't do door-to-door collection anymore?

Odile is teasing.

Here's the PDF, in English, from Sbrinz's link above.

Edit - Different municipalities have different collection schemes. I live in Canton Bern but not the city. We do not have door-to-door collection for waste. For trash, you put your bags out on specific days at several locations - but not at every door. Same with paper recycling. For bottles, cans and organic waste, you have to haul your items to one central location such as a store instead of leaving on the street at collection points. Be sure you're using the correct trash bags for city of Bern if that's where you live.

LOL, not teasing at all- we do not have any rubbish collections here in the whole Valley at all, zilch, de nada- apart from twice a year for larger objects!

And we have to pay by weight, not per bag.

in the Canton of Zürich they collect the waste in the morning of the day indicated (once per week), generally between 07.00 and 08.00. You are allowed to prepare it the day before after 17.00

and the Grüngutsammlung is also once per week

I gave you the link to download the .PDF in English,

On 1 January 2015, the extended organic waste collection is being introduced in the city of Bern.
Household food preparation waste and food leftovers are now being collected in
addition to garden waste.
The collection is being made city-wide (including the city centre) every week throughout
the year. The organic waste collection requires the use of a container and is chargeable
(annual fee according to container volume). Only registered organic waste containers
will be emptied.
Information and container registration: www.bern.ch/gruengutsammlung or Tel. 031 321 79 09 <-- call this number

Re: Bern, waste, trash, rubbish collection changed

So looking forward to Biel/Bienne where we will have bins for different kinds of trash that we can set out the evening before collection day. Where we are living right now, the container for taxed trash sacs was removed due to people ( our neighbprs claim 'foreigners') throwing in their trash in regular bags. Now we have to take our bags of trash to their pick up spot by 6:30 a.m. on collection day. Not the evening before because cats and rodents have a feast otherwise. I like to sleep till 7:00!

Re: Bern, waste, trash, rubbish collection changed

We are lucky where we live. We have weekly collections for household waste and cardboard on Thursdays, weekly collections for green waste and compostable stuff on Wednesdays and monthly collections of paper on Fridays.
All we have to do is put it at they end of our path and voila it's collected.

The other stuff recycling we have to take to the recycling point which isn't far away and I usually do that once a month. Will be doing it this morning in fact.

Re: Bern, waste, trash, rubbish collection changed

No collections in my commune and we pay for commune rubbish bags for the general stuff. We have to take all rubbish down to either the general rubbish containers (luckily my nearest is situated at the admin centre just down the road so I can walk there with my bag if necessary) or stuff like paper, glass, etc, goes to our local recycling centre. The bagged rubbish is collected on Thursday mornings.
