Re: When to apply Swiss kisses? And with whom?

This kissing thing really annoys me.
The act itself is a bit silly but whatever. But it means saying hello and goodbye takes x times as long as back home (where x is the number of people in the group).

Yes . The Americans are in general inhibited when it comes to this

I also find the "kiss kiss kiss" thing to be awkward... not only the actual doing it, but also to try to know when to do it (and when not to).

It seems, though, that when people know I'm American, they will often extend their hand for a handshake or give me a hug instead.

I've found that lots of Swiss like to practice hugging.

As for people you have just recently met (e.g. a friend of a friend), I find that it usually just takes one person to initiate the kiss-kiss-kiss thing. For me, if it's someone that I just got along really well with, I'll do that. But if it's someone I never really had the chance to speak much to, then I'll just simply say "hello" or "good bye" without any kind of physical interaction.

Most Swiss seem to be respectful of the fact that the kiss-kiss-kiss thing may not be part of your culture. So I think that they, too, are often hesitant. (Or maybe I'm just ugly? )

No siller than being best buddies after 5 nano seconds with anybody you meet, then not being able to remeber anything about them 3 nano seconds after parting.

You tend to "kiss" somebody (embrace is the correct term) only after getting to know them well and it's a sign of affection and respect.

Your way of announcing hello and goodbye to all and sundry ion one go is very disrespectful in our culture.

This is interesting. So when you arrive at a party (or leave) you are expected to greet everyone individually?

This could be really something when there are, say, 40 people at the party (or more). And if it is a big house / hall. And the music is blaring like crazy, people are dancing or drinking or throwing up or whatever....

But if that is the custom, then so be it.

Someone said you're also meant to (or it is customary to) greet everyone in a shop, that is customers and the merchant(s)... I assume they limit this to a small shop (e.g. pharmacy, bakery), but nonetheless!

Please give it a try at your local butcher shop and report back with the result...

Re: When to transfer from handshake to three kisses?

Hello everyone

Ok I'm totally new in Switzerland. I'm from Asia where physical contacts is not so popular, maybe because it's too hot there.

When I'm in Switzerland, I'm quite confused with the Swiss kisses.

I know at first people shake hand "Nice to meet you ...". The shake hand phase may last for a while before moving to three kisses.

My questions:
1. When to make the three kisses?
2. If someone wants to have three kisses with me, that person considers me as a friend? (Out of acquaintance zone)
3. Also with the above person, if I refuse to make Swiss kisses here, will that person be upset and think that I don't want to get closer as a friend?
4. Swiss people want to kiss everyone who they have met more than 2 times?

Thank you for reading the post. I guess my questions are a bit weird but I just don't know how to handle this Swissy.

Here around, in most of German speaking Switzerland, you exchange handshakes but NOT kisses

Of course NOT in supermarkets and department stores. And when entering a shop, you greet the assembly by saying Grüezi mitenand

You can do that or every second Tuesday, you can tongue kiss the cashier of your choice if you have a Supercard.

The cashier will call Securitas or the Police or, in Zürich, the Service of the Burghölzli

Re: When to apply Swiss kisses? And with whom?

Next news headlines to say "Strange American snogged a cashier in the Migros when she scanned his articles. The cashier did not object but he got upset when she did not give him 10x the cumulus. Management said it is recommended that you say hello to our cashiers rather than playing toncil tennis and the extra cumulus is only applied on Thursday evenings. It was not a reflection of the customers enthusiasm at embracing his new culture".

Yes, in Switzerland you give 3 kisses, in Germany usually two.
Two in Italy as well (unless one of you is Swiss, then it's 3).

OK here's another situation. A group of us (about 6, maybe) and an agent are at an apartment for a visitation. We all greet the agent at once, some greeted before as per standard pleasantries (that "see someone's eyes in street, need to say 'bonjour'"). But as everyone left the visitation, many said "au revoir" to all the others (not just the agent).

No kissing, though, just a look into eyes and the greeting spoken.
