Spray paint / vinyl (zürich)

Hey guys!

I'm looking for some pastel coloured spray paint to paint some chairs and I'm having a hard time finding any. I've checked migros garden and Bauhaus. Do you have any suggestions?

I'm also looking for some vinyl material to recover some old chairs and have no idea where to find it.

Let me know and thanks !

Amanda

Re: Spray paint / vinyl (zürich)

Or OBI.

As for the vinyl, it has been my experience that the fabric stores here are often quite limited in their selections, especially when it comes to specialty fabrics. So you might want to call in advance to ask if they have any "vinyl Stoff."

Does anyone know of some fabric stores in the Zurich area with pretty good-sized selections?

Or you could buy a few vinyl tablecloths and use that.

Re: Spray paint / vinyl (zürich)

Hello Amanda, I understand your frustration! I do quite a bit of crafting and it's been a nightmare to find proper supplies in Zurich, especially when it comes to fabric. DIY is really expensive and the selection is pretty dismal. I would suggest that you look for the vinyl online, with the search terms in German, along with the word "kaufen." German retailers tend to have more selection.

What kind of spray paint are you looking for, specifically? I've bought spray paints at both Migros DIY and Coop Bau + Hobby before, as well as garden furniture lacquer.

I never thought I'd say it, but I miss Home Depot!

Re: Spray paint / vinyl (zürich)

Hey ya, it certainly seems like diy projects are a lot more challenging than they should be here. I'm looking for some spray paint with a glossy finish to paint some wooden dining chairs. I'm hoping to find colours similar to these: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...84bbd57ab5.jpg
But it's proving extremely difficult. There are certainly lots of standard primary colours around.

Hmm, yeah, I haven't seen colours like that around either.
You could either look online, or you would have to use regular paint and a roller. If you're looking to do a distressed effect like in the photo, painting by hand would be totally okay.

Re: Spray paint / vinyl (zürich)

The larger shops of Coop Bau & Hobby have a mixer system, where you can choose the colour from the colour cards. Usually you have to buy about 300 ml as a minimum.

You would probably need Lack for a very shiny glossy finish. Ordinary vinyl paint is easier to handle, as it is water soluble, but it is not so glossy. You cannot mix different paints, they might bubble up.

Find your nearest shop, https://www.bauundhobby.ch/verkaufsstellen

Forget about finding a pastel finish spray paint aerosol!

Buy a small brush for the chair legs, and a medium wide brush for the seat. Ask for the best type of paint brush to use, probably the expensive camel hair brush is best. Also buy some very fine sand paper. For the final coat you need to thin the paint a bit with a suitable thinner: ask the Coop employee for the correct thinner (White spirit?).

For the vinyl seat covers, look for a Sattlerei (Saddle maker or saddle supplies or upholsterer)
http://tel.local.ch/en/q?what=sattle...here=&rid=8OrV
http://tel.local.ch/en/q?what=Sattle...on%29&rid=CWMB

or a car upholsterer (Auto Sattlerei)
http://tel.local.ch/en/q?what=Car+up...on%29&rid=PM6x

.HTH

I don't recommend spraying unless you have a place where you can build a tent and contain the mess which you get when you spray.

You should find what you need at Jumbo or Bau and Hobby.

For the vinyl you should try a store which sells fabrics.

Re: Spray paint / vinyl (zürich)

Should be okay with just normal spray cans, outside should be sufficient.
The industriall spray guns however are messy.

Re: Spray paint / vinyl (zürich)

Paint in aerosol cans is not very good. It is low pressured and needs lots of liquid to carry the paint to the object. As a result paint cans will deliver a very thin layer of paint which doesn't cover the object enough. The result is one needs many, many coats of aerosol delivered paint to make an object look halfway good, and even then they do not wear very well. You need some good fine hair paint brushes, correct paint, careful work, and patience.

Forget the "big" shops. Here in CH, they only carry the basics.

Instead, take the #11 tram to Signaustrasse station. Walk back a few steps toward Kreuzplatz, and you'll find a small paint store. Somehow, they've managed to squeeze in every kind of paint imaginable, including racks and racks of spray paints.

As for stick-on vinyl, look at Madal Bal. It's next to Migros Wengihof. (Edit: it looks like they've got many branches throughout the city. See link below.) It's where Google lists the Afro shop: https://www.google.com/maps/place/PI...ce40381862e2b1
