The Storks Are Returning Already

On our way over to Bienne this morning we spotted 6-8 storks in a field just outside Ins. This seems a bit too early for their return to Switzerland. Must be the mild weather so far this winter.

Re: The Storks Are Returning Already

To be honest I don't think they ever actually left. We've seen them on a regular basis in that area all through the autumn and right up to now.
There were some near the Landi when I was there on Thursday.

I think we saw them in that area once before, but that was in the summertime.

We make a point of visiting Altreu fairly often during the spring/summer to see them and there are some nesting in Avenches and also a colony at IENA too on the outskirts of Avenches.

We saw some too today... They could be migrant birds heading further North... Although we had the feeling too that it was too early.

Yes, we see herons and sometimes egrets as well over the winter, but never storks this early before.

It's a bit early for them too. We've only just got into those long winter nights that result in those stork deliveries you know.

Re: The Storks Are Returning Already

We usually see storks near our "holiday" home in western Sweden in late March/early April - around Easter. Hopefully they stay put in CH as the worst of winter yet to come. Despite mild temperatures the edible possibilities rather limited. Does anyone looking at this thread know how/if different bird species interact on their migrating timings? I am aware that different species have to some extent predictable timings, but wonder if there is a coordinated variation

Almost all of the bulbs in my CH garden were coming up in late November - I covered them with pine boughs and am holding my thumbs that the flowering phase stalls a bit.

I've seen daffodils coming up in sheltered spots around Stockholm as well, hopefuuly snow will fall and protect them.

Re: The Storks Are Returning Already

So I guess we're having another weird Winter, then?

I've been here only 5 years, so I guess I'm not entirely sure what a "normal" Swiss (Zurich) winter is like. But last year's winter certainly seemed much, much more mild than the four winters before it.

I wouldn't mind having another early Spring this year, but the thought of something like daffodils blooming as early as February is rather creepy.
