Mail key broken, what to do.

I broke my mail key accidentally for my apartment. Does anyone have any idea if:

The insurance will pay for it?
Can I have one made (molded), provided I give my contract, if so .. where.
Or, if the insurance won't cover it, how much would it cost to have it repaired or buy a new one with the installation.

1. Call the insurance and find out whether they cover expenses.
2. Call rental agency and tell them about the incident, inquire about further steps.

Revert back to forum in case still unclear about further procedure after following step 1 and 2.

Thanks, but about #2 I didn't rent it from an agency, but from someone who is out of town.

Contact person who is out of town after following step 1 and inquire how they would like to proceed. The most likely have a spare key to the mailbox and you can possibly get a key copied at any key place.

Why don't you just forward ur mail to me.
You could just bring a bottle (or 2) any time you need to collect.

How big is the excess on your insurance policy, likely to be way more than even a new lock.........
I can't believe they will cover what is in effect wear & tear.

It depends.
1. Is the mailbox currently locked ?
2. Have you another key ?
3. Is the broken part of the key still stuck in the lock of the mailbox ?

Copying an existing key would be the cheapest option.
Changing the lock would be the next option, but the mailbox has to be open. https://www.google.ch/search?q=brief...ml%3B522%3B220
If you need a professional to open the locked mail box, that would be expensive.

If there is a third party liability policy, and the damage to the key was the result of an accident, then the insurance should pay, but, as has been pointed out, there will be an excess.

If the key was damaged through old age / metal fatigue etc., it may just qualify as a 'small repair' for which usually the tenant has to pay the first Fr. 150 or so, and the owner pays the rest.

Re: Mail key broken, what to do.

I would first check that there is not a spare key with the owner. Secondly, if you do have the parts of the key (you should be able to use tweezers or pliers to pull it out, then a key-cutter may be able to copy it. I paid 30chf to have a key cut (back home it would be maybe 6chf!

Only after those options were taken would I consider asking help to replace the lock. My landlord knows how to change the barrels in the locks anyway (he did it when we moved in) so it might not be necessary to get a locksmith.

You might still be able to turn the key (broken part) in the lock to get it open - at least till you have time to sort it out. I have not had any issues with an unlocked maklbox, so I'd probably just leave it unlocked and close it with a bit of sticky tape until the key problem gets sorted...

Re: Mail key broken, what to do.

A few steps.

First - Ask a neighbour if you can have your mail put in their box until you get the key situation organized. At least this way you are not missing important stuff.
Second - tape a message over the box telling the mail delivery person that the lock is broken and to put your mail in XX's box (sign the note). They might agree to do so or will keep the mail at the local depot.
Third - check on the side/underneath or inside of the neighbour's box for the name of the supplier of the mailboxes. It will normally be there some place.
Fourth - hopefully there will be a number on the lock that you can see from the outside. This is only needed (order a new key) if you think you can get the broken key out. If not, you will need to go to step five.
Fifth - contact the company to order a new cylinder and keys (you will probably have to break the lock to get it out since I imagine part of the key is still inside). This should only take a couple of days to receive a new cylinder/keys. Use the address c/o the neighbour.
Sixth - use a flat head screw driver to open the cylinder. There will be a retaining ring on the inside that holds everything in place. Unscrew it and replace the cylinder and put the "arm" back in place. You should be good to go.

Useful advice, but anybody could place such a sticker or tape. It would probably be a good idea to additionally directly contact the Post and inform them.

Re: Mail key broken, what to do.

If I was in a similar situation, I would drill the lock so I could open the door, and then try to source and purchase a new barrel and replace it.

I've never enquired on the availability of end-user lock barrels, from normal retail outlets, but I'm sure loss of/broken keys are a common occurrence and replacements can't just be available to the trade.

My first port of call would be Bauhaus, where my box came from, and they have a large home security section.

Just ask your concierge, he or she will definitely know what people do in that situation.
