Re: To pay or not to pay-Migros city.

So you get a 1 chf voucher to use in the restaurant. They are basically charging people who go in to use the toilet without using the restaurant, that's pretty common policy and not just in Switzerland.
I guess you'd have got your voucher if you'd paid up rather than jumping the barrier.

Re: To pay or not to pay-Migros city.

This reminds me of pretty much all the big train stations in Switzerland where the WC facilities are run by McClean or some mob which charge per use of the toilet. Never mind that the place still smells, despite looking classier than your average public toilet. I think it's more hilarious in a way that women have no choice but to pay a higher charge to use the toilet (no offence to the females on this board).

Better off trying to hold it then board a train, then use the WC there for free, maybe one of those trains which need to stop at the station for five minutes or so.

I thought you're not supposed to use the WC while the train is stopped at a station. Or is this another old wives' tale like no flushing after 10 p.m. in a flat...

No. I did not have a one frank available so I jumped. Its really good exercise but for the " oldies " might be a bit of a problem

Well if the train is waiting in the station it does not matter. Just pee and dont flush. The next person can do it for you.

Only old rolling stock has a hole to the track, most new stock (almost all) have toilets that are not so giving to the environment...

Most people go to the toilet AFTER the consumption

probably zurich's most eughh toilet, langtsrasse's brick pissoir (tuck in your laces) is still miles better than the best public toilet in my home town in the uk which is best described as macabre.

This reminds me of a case of Swinglish that was unintentionally funny to native English speakers. Before SBB and ZVV had released their iPhone apps, a third-party came in and released the first timetable app for Switzerland called GottaGo, and the icon was a dude running. They had to change its name after getting countless bad ratings from people who expected it to be a toilet guide. (It was on iTunes internationally, not just in Switzerland.) It was ultimately renamed "Transport", but it's since been completely retired.

Oh, that one's nothing. The worst I've encountered here, by far, is the men's room at the heavy metal bar in Niederdorf, Ebrietas. I haven't been there for a while, so maybe they've fixed it by now. (By "fix", I mean burn down the building and build anew.)

Most buildings in the Niederdorf, most likely including THIS one
http://www.ebrietas.ch/photos.htm are protected. As Long as it does not look like the toilet on the terrace of Tangiers Airport back in 1971, which had its walls covered by living "animals" there is no reason to burn it down

Better would be: 1 CHF for the toilet but then you get a voucher for a free glass of water in the restaurant

Re: To pay or not to pay-Migros city.

Here in Belgium -you have to pay in most places to use a toilet-35 or maybe 50 cent. You get used to it and i must say it does mean that the toilets are always clean and furnished with soap and paper.

Also most have an attendant who takes pride in their job and must need to be paid somehow.

I will start saving some 1 franc coins in case for my visits to Switzerland

It's pretty much commonplace to pay for a public toilet in most places in Europe. Even in the UK, e.g. Victoria Station, you have to pay a tiny amount to use the public toilet. Not good if you're not carrying any shrapnel with you.

I wouldn't say that having to pay doesn't necessarily correspond to a clean toilet. Suffice to say cleanliness is taken slightly for granted when you're a male (at least most of the time anyway), and unless you also mean to say that it can be a lot worse in a "free" toilet.
